Front Edge of Door Hits Front Fender (Remove Material)

Subject:Front Edge of Door Hits Front Fender (Remove Material From Sound Insulator)

Models:1997-99 Pontiac Grand Prix (Coupe)
Built prior to February 15, 1999

Condition

Some customers may comment that the front edge of their door comes in contact with the front fender or pulls the front fender inward.

Cause

The sound insulator attached to the front fender may freeze. If this happens, and the door is opened, the front edge of the door may catch the frozen insulator and pull the fender inward.

Correction

Notice: Use inground hoist when available. Damage may occur to the door surface during repair if an above ground hoist is used.

Remove material from the sound insulator, using the following procedure:

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel.
  3. Remove the rear portion of splash shield.
  4. Insert screwdriver between the insulator and the fender bracket. Pry rearward to remove retaining clip and remove the insulator.
  5. Remove approximately 25 mm (1 in.) from the corner of the insulator, right where the insulator attaches to the center fender attachment.( LH side of vehicle remove lower left corner. RH side of vehicle remove lower right corner.)
  6. Adjust fender at this time if necessary.
  7. Reinstall sound insulator and retaining clip.
  8. Reinstall splash shield and wheel and tire.
