Important: Use the J 35616-A in order to inspect or probe a terminal in a diagnostic procedure. Use of the J 35616-A ensures that following conditions exist:

   • No damage to the terminal will occur.
   • Terminal contact tension is sufficient.
Refer to Checking Terminal Contact in Wiring Systems if terminal contact seems insufficient.

  1. Place the transaxle in the PARK position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  3. Disconnect the automatic transaxle control (BTSI) connector.
  4. Use a test light in order to backprobe between the BTSI connector terminal E and ground.
  5. Press the brake pedal and observe the test lamp.

Does the test light go off when you press the brake pedal?

Disconnect the stop lamp switch connector C2 and leave the test lamp at the same location.

Does the test lamp light?

Use a test light in order to backprobe between the automatic transaxle control (BTSI) connector terminal B and ground.

Does the test light illuminate?

Repair the short to B+ in circuit 1135.

  1. Inspect for a poor connection at the stop lamp switch.
  2. If the connection is good, adjust or replace the stop lamp switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement or Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement and Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment or Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment in Transaxle/Transmission for service procedure.

Use a test lamp in order to backprobe between the automatic transaxle control (BTSI) connector terminal A and B+.

Did the test lamp light?

Repair the poor connection or an open in circuit 1020.

  1. Inspect the automatic transaxle control (BTSI) for mechanical damage. Refer to Parts Cleaning and Inspection for service procedure.
  2. Replace the BTSI. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Assemble - Off Vehicle for service procedure.
  3. Inspect the BTSI system.

  1. Reconnect the automatic transaxle control (BTSI) electrical connector.
  2. Use a test lamp in order to backprobe between the underhood accessory wiring junction block connector C1 terminal D2 (CKT 434) and B+.

Did the test lamp light?

Use a test light in order to backprobe between the underhood accessory wiring junction block connector C2 terminal B3 (CKT 434) and B+.

Did the test lamp light?

  1. Disconnect the transaxle range switch connector C1.
  2. Use a test lamp in order to frontprobe between the transaxle range switch connector C1 terminal D (CKT 1050) and B+.

Did the test lamp light?

  1. Repair the following conditions in CKT 434 between the automatic transaxle control (BTSI) connector terminal A and the underhood accessory wiring junction block connector C2 terminal C11:
  2. • A poor connection
    • An open
  3. Inspect the BTSI system.

  1. Inspect for a poor connection at the underhood accessory wiring junction block.
  2. Replace the underhood accessory wiring junction block. Refer to Accessory Wiring Junction Block Replacement for service procedure.

Inspect CKT 434 for the following conditions between the underhood accessory wiring junction block connector C1 terminal D2 and the transaxle range switch connector C1 terminal A:

    • An open
    • A poor connection

Is there an open or a poor connection?

  1. Repair the following conditions in CKT 1050 between the transaxle range switch connector C1 terminal D and G117.
  2. • A poor connection
    • An open
  3. Inspect the BTSI system.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Repair the following conditions in CKT 434 between the underhood accessory wiring junction block connector C1 terminal D2 and the transaxle range switch connector C1 terminal A:
  2. • The poor connection
    • The open
  3. Inspect the BTSI system.

  1. Inspect for a poor connection at the transaxle range switch.
  2. Adjust/replace the transaxle range switch if there is no poor connection at the transaxle range switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement or Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment for servuce procedure.
  3. Inspect the BTSI system.

Is the repair complete?
