DEFINITION: The Body Control Module (BCM) has four selectable interior lighting modes:

    • Mode 1: Exit lighting and delayed illumination are disabled.
    • Mode 2: Exit lighting is disabled. Delayed illumination is enabled.
    • Mode 3: Exit lighting is enabled. Delayed illumination is disabled.
    • Mode 4: Exit lighting and delayed illumination are enable.

Delayed illumination turns on the courtesy lights for 25 seconds after the last door is closed with the ignition switch off. Exit lighting turns on the courtesy lights for 25 seconds upon removing the key from the ignition switch.

This table diagnoses a problem when these interior lighting modes do not operate as specified.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  2. Lower the driver's window in order to prevent lockout.
  3. Close all vehicle doors.
  4. Turn off the IP dimmer switch.

Are the courtesy lights off?

Turn the IP dimmer switch to the DOME position.

Are the courtesy lights on?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Leave the key in the ignition switch.
  3. Open any vehicle door.

Does the key in the ignition chime sound?

  1. Turn off the IP dimmer switch.
  2. Close all vehicle doors.
  3. Remove the MALL PGM fuse.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the ACC position.

When turning the ignition switch to the ACC, does the chime sound the BCM type (1,2,3, or 4 chimes)?

Turn the IP dimmer switch from OFF, to DOME, back to OFF. The BCM chimes 1,2,3, or 4 times indicating the current lighting mode.

Does the BCM sound 1-4 times?

  1. Set the lighting mode to mode 4. In order to advance the mode, turn the IP dimmer switch from off, to DOME, back to off several times in order to move modes. Stop when you hear four chimes.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  3. Replace the MALL PGM fuse.
  4. Close all the vehicle doors.
  5. Turn off the IP dimmer switch.
  6. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN, then back to OFF.
  7. While observing the courtesy lights, remove the key from the ignition switch.

When removing the key from the ignition switch, do the courtesy lights turn on for 25 seconds?

When the last door is closed, do the courtesy lights turn on for 25 seconds?

  1. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN, then back to OFF.
  2. Open, then close any vehicle door.
  3. While observing the courtesy lights, turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.

When turning the key to the RUN position, do the courtesy lights turn off?

  1. Inspect the Body Control Module (BCM) connectors for a poor terminal contact. Make repairs as needed.
  2. If the BCM connectors are OK, then replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement in Body Control System.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Reinstall the connectors and components that were removed.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position for 6 seconds.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  5. Remove the MALL PGM fuse.
  6. Turn the ignition switch to the ACC position. (The BCM sounds the chime a number of times equivalent to the BCM type installed on the vehicle.)
  7. Within one second, turn the ignition switch from the ACC position, to the OFF position, then back to the ACC position. (The BCM sounds any DTCs stored.)

Are there any BCM DTCs present?
