Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 24402-A Glass Sealant Removal Knife
    • J 39032 Stationary Glass Removal Tool
    • GM Adhesive Caulking Kit P/N 12346284 or equivalent
    • Solvent for cleaning the edge of the window (use GM Glass Cleaner P/N 1050427 or isopropyl alcohol) or equivalent
    • Household cartridge-type caulking gun
    • Commercial-type utility knife used to cut around the edge of the window

Caution: When working with any type of glass or sheet metal with exposed or rough edges, wear approved safety glasses and gloves in order to reduce the chance of personal injury.

Caution: Failure to prep the area prior to the application of primer may cause insufficient bonding of urethane adhesive. Insufficient bonding of urethane adhesive may allow unrestrained occupants to be ejected from the vehicle resulting in personal injury.

Caution: At least 24 hours are required for complete curing of repair material. The repair area should not be physically distrubed until after that time. Insufficient curing of urethane adhesive may allow unrestrained occupants to be ejected from the vehicle resulting in personal injury.

Caution: When replacing stationary windows, use Urethane Adhesive Kit GM P/N 12346392 (Canadian P/N 10952983), or a urethane adhesive system meeting GM Specification GM3651G, to maintain original installation integrity. Failure to use the urethane adhesive kit will result in poor retention of the window which may allow unrestrained occupants to be ejected from the vehicle resulting in personal injury.

Important: A quarter modular window can only be replaced using the extended method.

    Object Number: 314153 Size: SH
  1. Mask off the area around the quarter modular window in order to prevent paint damage.
  2. Remove the upper quarter trim. Refer to Rear Quarter Upper Trim Panel Replacement in Interior Trim.
  3. Remove the lower quarter trim. Refer to Rear Quarter Lower Trim Panel Replacement in Interior Trim.
  4. When cutting out the glass apply a spray mist of water around the surface to aid in the removal.
  5. Keep the blade of the knife as close to the pinchweld flange as possible in order to leave a base of urethane on the window.

  6. Using a curved blade knife from inside of the vehicle with multiple shallow cuts remove the urethane adhesive from the quarter modular window and the pinch-weld flange.
  7. Remove the quarter modular window from the pinchweld flange.
  8. Clean the quarter modular window and pinchweld flange with a clean, dampened cloth using GM Window Cleaner GM P/N 1050427 or isopropyl alcohol in order to clean the surface of the quarter modular window and the pinchweld flange of the excess urethane adhesive.
  9. Allow to air dry.

  10. Inspect the condition of the quarter modular window and the opening. Refer to Extended Method Description .
  11. Important: If corrosion of the pinchweld flange is present, or if sheet metal repairs or replacement are required, the pinchweld flange must be refinished in order to present a clean primer only surface. If paint repairs are required, mask the pinchweld flange bonding area prior to applying the color coat in order to provide a clean primer only surface. Materials such as (BASF DE17®), (DUPONT 2610®) or (PPG DP4® ) or equivalent are appropriate for this application.

  12. After repairing the opening as indicated, perform the installation.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 314153 Size: SH
  1. Dry fit the quarter modular window to the opening in order to determine the correct way to position the quarter modular window.
  2. Use masking tape to mark the location of the quarter modular window to the opening.
  3. Slit the masking tape at the edges of the quarter modular window.
  4. Remove the quarter modular window from the opening.
  5. Place the quarter modular window inside up on a clean, protected surface.
  6. Vigorously shake the primers provided in the urethane adhesive kit.
  7. Apply the pinchweld primer (# 3 black), using a new dauber to apply the primer to any exposed painted surfaces (or any scratches in the metal) of the pinchweld flange bonding area.
  8. Allow the pinchweld primer (# 3 black) to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
  9. Apply the PVC primer (#4 clear) using a new dauber to the quarter modular window.
  10. Using a cartridge type caulking gun, apply a smooth continuous 9.5 mm (3/8 in) bead of the urethane adhesive around the quarter modular window.
  11. Install the quarter modular window into the opening.
  12. Align the tape on the quarter modular window and the body.
  13. Press the quarter modular window firmly into place to wet-out and seat the urethane adhesive.
  14. Tape the quarter modular window to the body in order to minimize movement until the urethane adhesive cures.
  15. Partially lower a door window to prevent pressure build ups when closing doors prior to the urethane adhesive cure.
  16. Inspect the quarter modular window for water leaks. If any water leaks are found, use a plastic paddle to apply extra urethane adhesive at the leak point.
  17. 16.1. Remove any excess urethane adhesive that may have squeezed out from the body.
16.2. Use a soft spray of water in order to watertest the quarter modular window immediately after installation.
16.3. Warm or hot water is preferred in order to accelerate the cure of the urethane adhesive.
16.4. Do not direct a hard stream of high pressure water at the fresh urethane adhesive.
  18. Use the following procedure in order to properly cure the urethane adhesive:
  19. • Allow the vehicle to remain at room temperature of 22°  C or 72°  F at 30 % relative humidity.
    • For a minimum of (6 hours) for the moisture curing urethane adhesive.
    • For a minimum of (1 to 1/½ hours) for the chemical curing urethane adhesive.
    • Do not drive the vehicle until the urethane adhesive is cured.
    • Do not use compressed air in order to dry the urethane adhesive.
  20. Install the lower quarter trim. Refer to Rear Quarter Lower Trim Panel Replacement in Interior Trim.
  21. Install the upper quarter trim panel. Refer to Rear Quarter Upper Trim Panel Replacement in Interior Trim.
  22. Remove the tape from the quarter modular window and the body.
  23. Wipe the quarter modular window area with a clean, dampened cloth using GM Window Cleaner GM P/N 1050427 or isopropyl alcohol in order to clean the surface of the quarter modular window of the excess urethane adhesive.
  24. Allow to air dry.
