Listed below are the vehicle inspections and services that should be made by either the owner or a qualified technician at the frequencies indicated to help ensure the following:
• | Proper safety of the vehicle. |
• | The vehicle emission system performance. |
• | Dependability of the vehicle. |
Complete any necessary repairs at once. Use the proper fluids or lubricants whenever adding to the vehicle. For information on fluids and lubricants to use when service is required, refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations .
The following information covers the checks and services required to retain the safety, dependability, and emission control performance of the vehicle.
Make sure any necessary repairs are completed on time. Whenever any fluids or lubricants are added to the vehicle, make sure that they are the proper ones. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations .
It is important that the following underhood checks be performed at each fuel fill.
Check the engine oil level and add the proper oil if necessary. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations
Check the engine coolant level and add the proper coolant if necessary. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
In order to select the proper fluids and lubricants, refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations .
Check the windshield washer fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir and add the proper fluid if necessary.
Check tire inflation. Make sure tires are inflated to the correct pressures. Refer to Tire Inflation Pressure Specifications .
Clean the cassette deck. Perform cassette deck cleaning every 50 hours of cassette tape play. Refer to Cassette Player Care and Cleaning in Entertainment.
Make sure the seat belt reminder light and all the belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly. If the vehicle has a built-in child restraint, periodically make sure the harness straps, latch plates, buckle, clip, retractors and anchorages are working properly. Look for any other loose or damaged seat belt and built in child restraint system parts. If anything is seen that might keep a seat belt or built in child restraint system from doing its job, have it repaired. Replace any torn or frayed seat belts.
For seat belt diagnosis information, refer to Operational and Functional Checks in Seat Belts.
Also look for any opened or broken Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) covers. (The SIR system does not need regular maintenance.)
For SIR Diagnosis refer to SIR General Diagnosis in SIR General Diagnosis.
Inspect wiper blades for wear or cracking. Replace any wiper blade inserts that appear worn, cracked, damaged or that streak or miss areas of the windshield. Refer to Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement in Windshield Wiper/Washer System.
Check the transmission axle fluid level; add if needed. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations .
A fluid loss may indicate a problem. Check the system and repair if needed.
• | For the 4T60-E transaxle fluid level inspection Transmission Fluid Check in Automatic Transmission/Transaxle-4T60-E. If fluid was added, refer to Transmission Component Fluid Leaks in Automatic Transmission/Transaxle-4T60-E. |
• | For the 4T65-E transaxle fluid level inspection Transmission Fluid Check in Transmission/Transaxle-4T65-E. If fluid was added, refer to Transmission Component Fluid Leak Diagnosis in Automatic Transmission/Transaxle-4T65-E. |
Lubricate all door, rear compartment and glass weatherstrips. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations Colder more damp climates will require more frequent applications.
Lubricate the key lock cylinders. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations
Lubricate all of the following areas:
• | Body door hinges |
• | Body hood, safety lever, and prop rod pivot |
• | Fuel door |
• | Rear compartment hinges |
• | Rear compartment latches and locks |

• | Console cover hinges and latch. |
• | Seat hardware |
Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations for the proper type of lubricant. More frequent lubrication may be required when exposed to a corrosive environment.
Caution: When performing this check, the vehicle could move suddenly. Personal injury or property damage may result. Make sure there is enough room around the vehicle, in case the vehicle does move. Do not use the accelerator pedal, and be ready to turn OFF the engine immediately if it starts.
If the starter operates with the transmission in any other range, refer to Starting System Circuit Description .
Caution: When performing this check, the vehicle could move suddenly. Personal injury or property damage may result. Make sure there is enough room around the vehicle, in case the vehicle does move. Be ready to apply the regular brake immediately should the vehicle begin to move.
If the shift lever moved out of PARK, refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System Check in Steering.
Caution: When performing this check, the vehicle could begin to move. Personal injury or property damage may result. Make sure there is enough room in front of the vehicle, in case the vehicle begins to roll. Be ready to apply the regular brake immediately should the vehicle begin to move.
To check the parking brake, perform the following steps:
If the parking brake fails to hold the vehicle, repair the system. For adjusting the shoes refer to Parking Brake Shoe Adjustment and for cable adjustment refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment in Parking Brake.
To check the transmission PARK mechanism, perform the following steps:
If the PARK mechanism fails to hold the vehicle, repair the system.
