UPDATE- MANUAL TRANSAXLE GEARSHIFT LEVER & BOOT

Models Affected: 1988-90 LEMANS

SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE - SECTION 7B

This bulletin supersedes the "Gear Shift Lever" Removal/Installation procedure found on page 7B1-11 in the 1989 Pontiac LeMans Service Manual.

GEARSHIFT LEVER

Remove or Disconnect

1. Battery negative (-) cable.

* Position lever in neutral.

2. Base of gearshift lever boot from console by pulling up.

Rotate lever-stop bracket (204) off of the gearshift lever toward the left. (Figure 1)

3. Retaining pin connecting shift linkage pivot to lever; pull toward the rear of the vehicle.

4. Gearshift lever from vehicle.

Install or Connect

1. Gearshift lever to console, installing retaining pin to lever pivot.

* Rotate lever-stop bracket up and fasten to lever.

2. Base of boot into console, securing it under the boot retaining lip on the console top.

3. Battery negative (-) cable.

GEARSHIFT LEVER BOOT

Remove or Disconnect

1. Base of gearshift lever boot from console by pulling up.

2. Gearshift lever from console. Refer to "Gearshift Lever" in this bulletin.

3. Boot from gearshift lever. Slide boot off the bottom of the lever.

Install or Connect

1. Gearshift lever boot to gearshift lever.

2. Gearshift lever to console. Refer to 'Gearshift Lever" in this bulletin.

3. Boot base into console, securing it under the boot retaining lip on the console top.

4. Battery negative (-) cable.

Clean

* Any dirt or grease which may have rubbed on the gearshift lever or boot during the procedure.
