Subject:No Sound or Static in Rear Speakers (Replace Interface Module)

Models:1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette Premiere - Built After December 31, 1998
1999 Pontiac Montana
with Video Entertainment System (RPO U42)

Condition

Some customers may comment that the rear speakers do not operate with the vehicle radio on and the video system turned off. Additional customer comments may include static in the rear speakers or the inability to mute the rear speakers.

Cause

A revised interface module was introduced for the 1999 model year. Due to these design changes, the interface module may incorrectly respond to control inputs.

Correction

Important: If the vehicle is an Oldsmobile Premiere, built in January, 1999, you must first verify that the vehicle contains a revised (second generation) interface module. This can be quickly accomplished by lowering the video screen to viewing position and inspecting the mounting plate on the right rear side near the hinge. If you see a round silvered magnet, retained by two diagonally placed rivets, the vehicle is equipped with the affected interface module and this bulletin applies.

Replace the interface module with a new interface module (P/N 12458827), using the procedure found in the Entertainment sub-section of Body and Accessories in the 1999 U/X Van Service Manual.
