1984 DIESEL ENGINE INJECTION PUMP

Repairs to the 1984 Pontiac diesel engine injection pump may qualify under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty Basic Coverage of 12 months/12,000 miles or the Powertrain Coverage of 36 months/50,000 miles for diesel engines or the Emission Control Systems warranties of 5 years/50,000 miles (10 years/100,000 miles California Diesel Engine Option). For the language of each warranty which defines what is covered, refer to Section 1, Part 1, of the 1984 Pontiac Service Policies and Procedures Manual and Section 1, Part 2, for additional information on specific items.

NOTE: In those cases where repairs qualify under both the Powertrain Coverage and Emission Control Systems Warranties, the Emissions Warranty will apply with no deductible.

The diesel pump manufacturers have agreed to perform repairs qualified under warranty coverage through authorized pump repair service agencies at no charge during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage of 12 months/12,000 miles (including the optional limited warranty extension). Repairs, such as external seals, gaskets, and solenoids, are to be normally performed by the Pontiac dealer and should not be provided to the pump repair service agency for repair. Labor Time Guide allowances for such repairs as can be performed by the Pontiac dealer are published in the Labor Time Guide or Dealer Information Bulletins.

Repairs Which Can Be Performed By The Pontiac Dealer

Such repairs which can be performed by the Pontiac dealer, and which are covered by the warranties listed above, are to be submitted as a warranty claim to Pontiac.

Repairs Which Cannot Be Performed By The Pontiac Dealer

If the diesel pump requires a repair which cannot be performed by the Pontiac dealer, the pump is to be removed, packaged correctly (refer to Packaging Procedure section of this bulletin), and sent to the nearest authorized pump repair service agency (a list of those agencies and their locations appear in this bulletin). The agency will then repair the unit or furnish an exchange unit to the Pontiac dealer.

Warranty information for re airs performed by an authorized pump repair agency is as follows:

1. During New Vehicle Limited Warranty Basic Coverage

Pump repair will be performed at no charge by the authorized pump repair service agency when a defect exists. The Pontiac dealer may submit a warranty claim for the labor to remove and reinstall the repaired or exchanged pump plus the normal shipping charges incurred.

NOTE: An additional 0.2 hour administrative allowance will be paid on warranty claims when diesel pumps are repaired by an authorized pump repair service agency. The additional administrative allowance is to be added to the published time allowance.

2. Beyond the New Vehicle Limited Warranty Basic Coverage Period But During the Powertrain Coverage or Emission Control Systems Warranties.

A. Powertrain Coverage

Covers only defective external seals and gaskets. Terms of Powertrain repair amounts up to $100.00 for the total dollar amount of the claim (refer to page 30 of the Pontiac Warranty Claim Preparation Manual). The $100.00 will automatically be subtracted when the claim is paid. The Powertrain coverage covers the diesel engine and injection pump for a period of 36 months or 50,000 miles from date vehicle was first placed in service after expiration of the Pontiac New Vehicle Limited 12 Month/12,000 Mile Warranty.

The dealer is to pay for the repairs performed by the authorized pump repair service agency. The dealer may submit a warranty claim to Pontiac for the labor to remove and reinstall the repaired or exchanged pump plus the normal shipping charges incurred and the sublet repair charge from the pump repair agency.

Claims for repairs under the Powertrain Coverage will be subject to the $100 per repair visit deductible amount.

NOTE: An additional 0.2 hour administrative allowance will be paid on warranty claims when diesel pumps are repaired by an authorized pump repair service agency. The additional administrative allowance is to be added to the published time allowance.

1980 - 1984 MODEL DIESEL INJECTION PUMP COVERAGE

Warranty coverage on the 1980 and 1981 model diesel engine injection pumps remain unchanged. A chart outlining the coverages for the 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, and 1984 model pumps is shown on the following page.

The chart also summarized the disposition of charges to the dealer as pump repairs are performed within the various warranty coverages.

1. Packaging Procedure

All Dealers have been supplied with special shipping cartons which will protect the injection pump from shipping damage. Follow packaging instructions on the shipping carton. Additional cartons are available through authorized pump repair service agencies. Make sure that all possible fuel is drained from the units before packaging. Install caps to prevent foreign material from entering the openings. The pump must also be placed in the plastic bag contained in the carton for additional protection against fuel spillage. Place the pink, blue and white copies of Pontiac Form 7201-191 in the carton and ship the unit pre-paid to the nearest pump repair agency. The shipping charges are to be submitted to Pontiac on the warranty claim invoice in the "Sublet-Dealer Material-Towing" column. The repaired or exchange unit will be shipped to the dealer "pre-paid" by the pump repair agency.

2. Damage or Theft in Transit

Injection pumps which are damaged or stolen from the car during transit must be handled on a Transportation Claim (Form 7201-105-Pontiac). New injection pumps are available through WDDGM for this purpose.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
