Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the engine assembly. Refer to Engine Replacement .
  2. Place the engine on a stand.
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  4. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  5. Remove the generator brackets.
  6. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
  7. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement
  8. Remove the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the engine oil and the filter.
  10. Remove the crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft pulley hub. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer and Hub Replacement .
  11. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  12. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .

  13. Remove the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  14. Remove the oil pump drive.

  16. Remove the thrust plate.

  17. Object Number: 30275  Size: SH
  18. Remove the camshaft position sensor.

  19. Object Number: 4322  Size: SH
  20. Remove the camshaft. Do not damage the camshaft bearings with the camshaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the camshaft lobes and bearings with GM E.O.S. P/N 1051396 or equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 4322  Size: SH
  3. Install the camshaft with extreme care to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.

  4. Object Number: 30275  Size: SH
  5. Install the camshaft position sensor.

  6. Object Number: 183264  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the thrust plate.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  9. Install the tensioner. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  10. Install the timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  11. Install the sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  12. Install the crankcase front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  13. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  14. Install the oil pump drive.
  15. Install the rocker arm and pushrod. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  16. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  17. Install the crankshaft balancer and hub Refer to Crankshaft Balancer and Hub Replacement .
  18. Install the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  19. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement
  20. Install the power steering pump.
  21. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement .
  22. Install the generator brackets.
  23. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  24. Install the engine assembly. Refer to Engine Replacement .
  25. Install the oil filter.
  26. Fill the engine with oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  27. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
