FORWARD CLUTCH HOUSING TURBINE SHAFT REDESIGN

Subject: FORWARD CLUTCH HOUSING TURBINE SHAFT REDESIGN - 1982 THM 200C

Beginning early in the 1982 model year, the THM 200C transmission turbine shaft, which is welded to the forward clutch housing assembly (Figure #3), was redesigned to accommodate a 245mm diameter converter assembly. Previously, the turbine shaft was designed to accommodate, 254mm and 298mm converter assemblies (Figure 1 and 2).

When servicing any THM 200C transmission, that necessitates replacing the forward clutch housing assembly, refer to the following chart for ordering parts:

1st design forward clutch housings cannot be used on 2nd or 3rd design forward clutch housing applications.

The 3rd design forward clutch housing turbine shaft must have an "O" ring (P/N 8636033) installed directly below the spline (Figure #3), along with the teflon oil seal rings located near the housing end of the shaft (Figure #3) (P/N 8628090). Refer to the service manual for proper installation of these rings.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
