Removal Procedure
- Release the park brake.
- Apply the brake pedal at least 10 times.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
.
- Remove the lock ring and the caulking nut from the spindle.
Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.
Important: Pull the drum straight off the spindle. The 2 inner wheel bearing races are not secured inside the drum by a ring.
- Remove the drum from the spindle.
- If necessary, remove the wheel bearing. Refer to
Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement
.
Inspection Procedure
- Clean the brake components.
- Inspect the brake drum and the inner races of the wheel bearings inside the drum. Replace the drum, if necessary. Refer to
Brake Drum Surface and Wear Inspection
.
- Apply lubricant to the adjuster assembly.
- Inspect the threads of the adjuster assembly for smooth rotation.
Installation Procedure
- If you removed the wheel bearing, install the wheel bearing. Refer to
Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement
.
- Adjust the rear brakes. Refer to
Drum Brake Adjustment
.
Important: Slide the brake drum straight on the spindle. Use care in order to properly position the wheel bearings and the drum on the spindle.
- Install the brake drum to the spindle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the lock ring and the caulking nut to the spindle.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 200 N·m (148 lb ft).
- Stake the lock ring to the nut.
- Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
.
- Lower the vehicle.
Important: If the clicking sound of the adjuster is not audible from either brake drum, the clearance between the brake shoes and the brake drum is adjusted.
- Apply the brake pedal at least 10 times.
Verify the clicking sound of the adjuster assembly is not audible from either brake drum.
- Adjust the park brake. Refer to
Park Brake Adjustment
