Subject: | Engine No Crank, No Start, Battery Discharged After Vehicle Has Not Been Used for Approximately Five Days (Reprogram Engine Control Module [ECM]) |
Models: | 2005 Saturn ION |
with 2.2L Four-Cylinder Engine (VIN F - RPO L61) |
Attention: | Fixed Operations Manager and Technician |
This bulletin is being revised to add an Important statement regarding the 2006 Saturn ION. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-06-04-036 (Section 06 -- Engine).
Important: This bulletin does not apply to the 2006 Saturn ION. At the start of production, 2006 Saturn ION vehicles were programmed with the software update mentioned in this bulletin. 2005 Saturn vehicles should be reprogrammed with the latest ECM software update only if the above concern is encountered.
Some customers may comment that their vehicle will not start due to a discharged battery after the vehicle has not been used for approximately 5 days.
During the ignition key OFF cycle, the ECM intermittently may not receive the proper shutdown sequence from the body control module (BCM) allowing the ECM to stay "active" creating a high parasitic drain of 165-180 mA on the battery. The normal parasitic drain is approximately 5-12 mA depending on vehicle option content. The graph shown below illustrates the Battery Storage versus Parasitic Load relationship that can be used to determine battery life.
Follow the steps listed below in the Service Procedure to reprogram the ECM with an updated calibration.
Reprogramming ECM
Important: Before installing the new ECM calibration, make sure the Saturn Service Stall (SSS) version is TIS 5.0 2005 or later.
Important: While the ignition is OFF, apply the parking brake to disable the daytime running lights (DRLs) prior to starting the reprogramming procedures.
Important: Technician must select the "Reprogram" option in order to reprogram the ECM.
Reprogram the ECM with the appropriate calibration. Use Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) software version 5.0 2005 or later data CD. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the SSS User Guide or "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Vehicle Control Systems section of the 2005 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 3 (SI Document ID #1265170) for reprogramming procedures.
