This bulletin is being updated to change the Warranty Information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-06-04-020B (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).
Some customers may comment on any of the following conditions:
• | Service Engine Soon (SES) lamp is illuminated (continuously or intermittently), with any of the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) set: |
- | U1064 "Lost Communication with Body Control Module (BCM) Dash Integration Module (DIM)" |
- | P0461 "Fuel Level Sensor Performance" |
- | P0420 "Catalyst System Low Efficiency" |
• | Fuel gauge stays on empty with fuel remaining |
• | Fluctuating speedometer and/or tachometer |
• | Intermittent vehicle theft security telltale lamp on |
A battery voltage interruption, such as a low state of charge and/or battery disconnect, may cause a memory loss in the engine control module (ECM), leading to the premature execution of the P0420 "Catalyst System Low Efficiency" diagnostic on a "green" catalytic converter. Interruption of ECM serial communication with the BCM due to an ECM software anomaly can cause the fuel gauge to remain at empty, the vehicle theft security light to illuminate, and the U1064 diagnostic to fail.
Follow the steps listed in the Service Procedure section of this bulletin and reprogram the ECM with appropriate new calibration.
Reprogramming ECM
Important: Before installing the new ECM calibration, make sure the Saturn Service Stall (SSS) version is TIS 5.0 2005 or later.
Important: While the ignition is OFF, apply the parking brake to disable the daytime running lights (DRLs) prior to starting the reprogramming procedures.
Important: Technician must select "Reprogram" option in order to reprogram the ECM.
Reprogram the ECM with the appropriate calibration.
Use the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) software version 5.0 2005 or later data CD. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the SSS User Guide and "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Vehicle Control Systems section of the 2005 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 3 for reprogramming procedures.
For vehicles repaired under the 8-year/80,000 mile (130,000 km) emission controller warranty, use:
