Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

Go to Step 2

Go to Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle

1. Verify that the transmission is in Park or Neutral.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Go to Step 3

Is the theft indicator flashing?

Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle

Go to Step 4

Does the starter solenoid click?

Go to Starter Solenoid Clicks, Engine Does Not Crank

Go to Step 5

1. Disconnect the transmission range switch.
2. Connect a test lamp between the crank voltage circuit of the transmission range switch harness connector and ground.
3. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 7

Important: You must use 10 AWG wire for the fused jumper. Any smaller wire will cause too high of resistance and a misdiagnosis will occur.

1. Connect a 25-amp fused jumper wire between the crank voltage circuit of the transmission range switch and the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of the transmission range switch.
2. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

Go to Step 9

Go to Step 7

Test the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit for a short, high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 14

Go to Step 10

Inspect for poor connections at the ignition switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 14

Go to Step 11

Inspect for poor connections at the transmission range switch or clutch pedal position switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 14

Go to Step 12

Inspect for poor connections at the starter solenoid. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 14

Go to Step 13

Replace the ignition switch. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .

Did you complete the replacement?

Go to Step 14

Replace the transmission range switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement for the automatic transaxle - 4T40-E/4T45-E.

Did you complete the replacement?

Go to Step 14

Replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Did you complete the replacement?

Go to Step 14

Operate the system for which the symptom occurred.

Is the symptom still present?

Go to Step 3
