The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment, of a double engagement or double bump when shifting the transaxle into "Drive" range.
Recommendation/Instructions:
The double engagement is a calibrated shift sequence for transaxle durability. When the transaxle is shifted into Drive, the 2nd gear clutch will apply first, then 1st gear clutch is applied seconds later to promote better durability of 1st gear. This feature is to protect 1st gear during abusive or excessively hard acceleration from launch.
The double bump sensation is a normal characteristic of design for the MJ7/MJ8 automatic transaxle.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
