Recently, there has been an instance where 1983 ECM's have been mislabeled. The mislabeling concerns 1983 ECM 1226100 being labeled as 1982 1/2 ECM 1225610. This mislabeling has occurred only on production units and not service units. There will be no driveability conditions noticed. In the event of ECM replacement, the PROM retainer from the 1983 ECM 1226100 will fit into the 1982 1/2 ECM 1225610.
The correct identity of the ECM can be determined by checking the manufacturing code on the side of the ECM. Refer to Figure 1 for an example of the manufacturing code. The correct information for each service number is:
SERVICE NO. MANUFACTURING CODE ENGINE APPLICATION ------------ ------------------- ------------------- 1225610 743 (first 3 digits) 82 1/2, 1.8L & 2.5L 1226100 773 (first 3 digits) 83 1.8L & 2.5L
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
