"Short Gear" rack and pinion assemblies are available for service replacementt. The short gear is a complete gear assembly except for the following:
End Takeoff Gear Center Takeoff Gear ---------------- ------------------- 1. Inner and outer tie rod assemblies 1. Inner and outer tie rod assemblies
2. Tie rod boots
3. Breather tube
4. Attachment hardware
Boot clamps are included with the short gear.
Use of the short gear is recommended when the expense of individual parts and required labor necessary to service a rack and pinion assembly would exceed the expense of installing the short gear assembly. The short gear incorporates all product improvements made since 1982.
Refer to the chassis service manual for informatuin on parts transfer or R&R procedures.
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft prior to lowering the cradle can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. Operation of the vehicle with this damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.
