The CS-144 generator used on the above listed models was originally serviced only as a complete assembly. See Service Bulletin 86-6D-2A for a listing of remanufactured generators. Service parts for the CS-144 generator are now available through GMWDD, and a listing of parts unique to these generators is provided.
For diagnosis of the generator, refer to Section 6D of the Service Information Manual.
The CS-144 internal parts are similar to earlier models but are electrically different. Therefore, only service parts listed for the CS-144 should be used. There is also a basic design and assembly difference in the slip ring end bearing as compared to past models. This difference is as follows:
A new slip ring end bearing (Part No. 1989711) must be installed whenever the rotor is separated from the slip ring end frame.
1. Install the slip ring end bearing onto the rotor shaft by pressing on the inner race until the stop is reached. (See illustration).
2. Guide the bearing into the slip ring end cavity being careful not to deform the tolerance rings (plastic rings) that are .Dart of the outer race of the bearing.
3. Install the four thru-bolts from the slip ring end frame to the drive end frame.
For warranty purposes, use Labor Operation Number J4080, and the appropriate ADD condition when repairing the generator. When replacing generator with a remanufactured unit, use Labor Operation Number J4100.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
