TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS: SUBJECT: 1984-1987 THM 440-T4 (ME9) DELAYED 2-3 SHIFT OR LOSS OF 3RD GEAR
TRANSAXLE MODELS: VEHICLE APPLICATIONS: ALL A, C, H, E/K-CARS
Some THM 440-T4 transaxles may exhibit a delayed 2-3 shift or loss of 3rd gear caused by a cut or damaged 3rd clutch inner seal. To repair this condition, a new thicker 3rd clutch inner seal (Item #635A - Figure 1) has been released.
This change entered production after September 1, 1986 (Julian Date 244) and is also incorporated in all Service Replacement Transaxle Assembly (SRTA) models, effective November 15, 1986 (Julian Date 319).
Remove transaxle, disassemble, inspect and replace the 3rd clutch inner seal, as well as other parts included in the appropriate Service Package.
To repair models built prior to aforementioned dates, a service package (Part Number 8646991) has been released.
This package includes the following parts:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
