2.5L L4 ENGINE EXHAUST SMOKE AFTER EXTENDED IDLE
BULLETIN REVISED TO INCLUDE ALL 1986 MODELS WITH 2.5L ENGINE.
A condition of blue exhaust tailpipe smoke may occur during drive away, after an extended idle, on 1986 models with a 2.5L engine.
This condition is the result of excessive oil accumulation on the exhaust valve stems and only occurs after a prolonged idle period followed by a rapid application of the throttle.
To repair this condition replace all the exhaust valve springs with spring, P/N 3735381, and shield, P/N 10007818.
As in any service procedure diagnostics are the key to an effective repair. Verification that existing intake valve seals are present and correctly installed and that casting porosity is not present should precede this procedure.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
