INSUFFICIENT CHARGE FROM GEN. (POOR BRACKET TO GEN. GROUND)

MODELS AFFECTED: 1987-88 CENTURYS AND 1988 REGALS WITH THE LB6 2.8L V-6 ENGINE (VIN CODE W)

Condition

The vehicles listed above may have a charging system that is charging at a lower voltage than is required to properly charge the battery.

Cause

The generator may have an insufficient ground path to the engine block. The aluminum bracket is mounted to a painted steel engine lift hook, and the fasteners are phosphate coated (black color, poor conductor). Under this condition, the generator is working properly although the voltage to the battery is reduced, which can cause the battery to be undercharged.

Correction

1. Remove either of the existing nuts shown in the Illustration. If the stud is already cadmium plated (silver colored), this procedure is not required and normal service manual procedures should be used to diagnose condition.

2. Wire brush the stud to a bare metal appearance on some of the threads.

3. Replace the nut with P/N 11502812. This nut has an electrically conductive coating (cadmium) for proper grounding.

4. Vehicles made after approximately 1-1-88 should have a cadmium plated stud already installed from the factory.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
