BRAKE DRUM ADJUSTMENT HOLE PLUG REMOVAL
Some rear brake drum adjusting hole plugs cannot be removed using a punch because of insufficient die piercing. On drums where a punch will not work, the hole plug can be removed using the following procedure:
1. Remove the rear wheel and reinstall two lug nuts backwards to hold drum in place against rear wheel bearing. 2. Locate an accessible adjusting hole plug (select a plug not covered with a balance weight). 3. Position the adjuster hole plug on the left hand drum at 10:00 or on the right hand drum at 3:00 and set the park brake. 4. Prick punch four (4) spots within the hole plug outline. 5. Drill four (4) 6mm (1/4 inch) diameter holes within the hole plug outline. 6. File the hole opening as necessary to insert a brake adjusting tool. 7. Install rubber adjusting hole cover (see part number on Page 5C2-2 of the 1988 Skylark/Skyhawk Service Manual).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
