CAMPAIGN: WATER PUMP PULLEY (INSPECT DATE CODE)

WATER PUMP PULLEY

1988 Celebrity, 6000, Ciera, Century with 2.5L Engine (LR8)

TO: ALL AFFECTED DEALERS:

General Motors of Canada has determined that certain 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity, Pontiac 6000, Oldsmobile Ciera, Buick Century model vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine may have been produced with a water pump pulley that could fracture. This could result in loss of accessory drive components including power steering, alternator and water pump. The engine will continue to run, but the driver would be warned of the failure by:

A. Alternator light or loss of voltage as soon as failure occurs.

B. Noise is likely to occur at time of failure.

C. Over temperature light or gauge if vehicle is driven to overheat.

D. Reduce power steering assist.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Involved are certain 1988 Celebrity, 6000, Ciera, Century models equipped with a 2.5L engine and produced within the following VIN breakpoints:

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved Dealers with this bulletin. Any Dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your Dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the Dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

CAMPAIGN PROCEDURE:

Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are requested to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

All owners of record at the time of campaign release are shown on the attached computer listing and have been notified by first class mail from General Motors. The listings provided are for campaign activity only and should not be used for any other purpose.

Parts required should be ordered through regular channels as follows:

It is estimated that (40%) will require inspection only and (60%) will require a new water pump pulley. Order parts accordingly based on attached involved vehicle listing.

PARTS AND LABOUR CLAIM INFORMATION:

Credit for the campaign work performed will be paid upon receipt of a properly completed campaign claim card, RAPID terminal or DCS transmission in accordance with the following:

Time allowance includes 0.1 hour for Dealer administrative detail associated with this campaign. Parts credit will be based on Dealer net plus 30% to cover parts handling.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. Open and prop hood.

Inspection

2. Water pump pulleys are stamped (on front face) with a 4-character production manufacturing date code which is visible on pulley as installed on vehicle (see illustration). First two (2) characters are the date code. Last two (2) characters can be disregarded. Check date code to determine if replacement is required.

Note: Letter 'I' is not used.

Character Position #2 = Year of pulley production

7 - 1987 8 - 1988

Character Position #3 & #4 - Disregard

If inspection indicates date code stamp F7, G7, H7, J7, K7 or L7, replacement is required. Follow pulley replacement described below.

If date code stamp is anything other than F7, G7, H7, J7, K7 or L7, replacement is NOT required. Proceed to Step Two (2).

Pulley Replacement

3. Install fender cover and disconnect negative battery cable.

4. Remove serpentine belt. To remove belt, rotate tensioner as shown in illustration.

5. Remove heater hose pipe clips to allow sufficient room to remove water pump pulley.

6. Remove water pump pulley using Pulley Remover J-25034-B or J-29785-A.

7. Install new water pump pulley using Pulley Installer J-25033B or B7-7515.

8. Reinstall heater hose pipe clips.

9. Reinstall serpentine belt. To reinstall belt, rotate tensioner as shown in illustration. Belt routing is also shown in Illustration.

10. Install Campaign Identification Label.

11. Connect negative battery cable, remove fender cover and close hood.

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.

Dear General Motors Customer:

This notice is sent to inform you that General Motors of Canada is conducting a recall campaign that includes your vehicle.

It has been determined that certain 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity, Pontiac 6000, Oldsmobile Ciera and Buick Century models equipped with a 2.5L engine may have been produced with a water pump pulley that could fracture. This could result in loss of accessory drive components including power steering, alternator and water pump. The engine will continue to run, but the driver would be warned of the failure by:

A. Alternator light or loss of voltage as soon as failure occurs.

B. Noise is likely to occur at time of failure.

C. Over temperature light or gauge if vehicle is given to overheat.

D. Reduce power steering assist.

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, the water pump pulley on your vehicle will be inspected, and replaced if required. This service will be performed for you at no charge.

Please contact your GM Dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service date. Instructions for providing this service have been sent to your Dealer. The labour time necessary to perform the inspection is approximately fifteen (15), but an additional thirty (30) minutes will be required if pulley replacement is necessary. Please ask your Deater if you wish to know how much additional time will be needed to schedule and process your vehicle.

This letter identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this letter to your Dealer will assist their Service personnel in completing the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time.

Further assistance, if required, may be obtained from the General Motors Zone Office nearest you. Your vehicle Owner's Manual provides the location and phone number of each respective Zone Office.
