A CUSTOMER MAY COMMENT THAT THE "ABS" WARNING LIGHT IS ON. DTC'S 34 AND/OR 35 MAY BE SET, ALONG WITH 55. FOLLOWING THE SERVICE MANUAL DIAGNOSIS USUALLY LEADS TO REPLACEMENT OF THE REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR JUMPER HARNESS OR EBCM, WHICH FIXES THE VEHICLE TEMPORARILY. HOWEVER, THE CUSTOMER MAY RETURN IN A FEW DAYS WITH THE SAME COMMENT.
WATER CAN ENTER ONE OR BOTH OF THE ABS REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR JUMPER HARNESSES AT CONNECTORS C105 OR C106. THE WATER CAN THEN WICK DOWN THE JUMPER HARNESS AND UP THE BODY HARNESS. THIS WATER CAN LEAD TO A VOLTAGE LEAK TO GROUND, SOMETIMES SO SLIGHT THAT IT CANNOT BE DETECTED, EVEN BY A GOOD DIGITAL VOLT-OHMMETER.
THIS WAS CORRECTED IN PRODUCTION JUST PRIOR TO THE START OF THE 1995 MODEL YEAR, BY RELOCATING THE CONNECTORS OUT OF THE WATER SPLASH AREA.
1. REPLACE BOTH THE RIGHT AND LEFT REAR WHEEL ABS SPEED SENSOR JUMPER HARNESSES WITH P/N 12148674. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE 1994 SERVICE MANUAL, PAGE 5E1-193. NOTICE THAT THE NEW HARNESS IS ABOUT 8" (200 MM) LONGER THAN THE OLD HARNESS. INSTALL THE ROSEBUD CLIP ON THE NEW HARNESS INTO THE HOLE WHERE THE OLD CONNECTOR CLIP WAS (SEE FIGURE 1).
2. CUT THE OLD CONNECTORS FROM THE BODY HARNESS, AND DISCARD. CHECK THE WIRES COMING OUT OF THE BODY GROMMET FOR SIGNS OF WATER INTRUSION. IF ANY WATER IS FOUND, THE WIRE MUST BE CUT BACK TO THE POINT THAT NO MORE WATER IS FOUND. INSTALL TWO NEW CONNECTOR ASSEMBLIES, P/N 12167120, USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:
A. FOR THE LEFT SIDE CONNECTOR:
- REMOVE THE BACK SEAT TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE BODY HARNESS.
- DRILL OUT THE POP-RIVETS IN THE GROMMET RETAINER USING A 3/16" (4.75 MM) DRILL.
- FROM BENEATH THE CAR, INSTALL THE NEW CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY TO THE NEW ABS HARNESS CONNECTOR, AND USE ROSEBUD CLIP, P/N 12084149, TO SECURE THE CONNECTOR IN THE HOLE SHOWN IN FIGURE 1 (WHERE THE OLD HARNESS CLIP WAS LOCATED).
- PASS THE WIRES THROUGH THE BODY GROMMET, AND SPLICE TO THE WIRES IN THE BODY HARNESS, USING THE CRIMP AND SEAL SPLICE SLEEVES SUPPLIED WITH THE CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY. SPLICES SHOULD BE MADE ONLY INSIDE THE BODY. THESE SLEEVES SHOULD BE CRIMPED USING THE PLIERS IN WIRE REPAIR KIT J38125, AND SHOULD BE HEATED TO ALLOW THE INTERNAL SEALER TO MAKE THE SPLICE WATER TIGHT.
- USE A NEW SEAL, P/N 12064811, THEN REINSTALL THE GROMMET RETAINER, USING NEW STEEL POP-RIVETS, 3/16" X 1/2" (4.75 MM X 13.5 MM). DO NOT USE ALUMINUM POP-RIVETS. MAKE SURE THAT THE WIRES ARE NOT PINCHED BY THE RETAINER.
THE WIRES FOR THE LEFT SPEED SENSOR ARE BLACK AND RED. SEE THE WIRING DIAGRAM ON PAGE 8A-44-1 OF THE 1994 SERVICE MANUAL FOR MORE DETAILS.
B. FOR THE RIGHT SIDE CONNECTOR:
- INSTALL THE NEW CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY TO THE NEW ABS HARNESS CONNECTOR, AND USE THE ROSEBUD CLIP TO SECURE THE CONNECTOR IN THE HOLE (SEE FIGURE 1).
- PULL THE WIRING OUT OF THE CONDUIT THAT GOES TOWARD THE BODY GROMMET, AND SPLICE THE WIRES USING AS MUCH LENGTH OF THE NEW WIRES AS POSSIBLE.
- USE THE CRIMP AND SEAL SPLICE SLEEVES SUPPLIED WITH THE CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY. PROPER HEAT SEALING IS IMPORTANT TO INSURE A WATER TIGHT SEAL.
- INSTALL THE WIRES BACK INTO THE CONDUIT.
REMEMBER TO CLEAR THE DTC'S WHEN THE REPAIR IS COMPLETE.
PARTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE ON 6/26/95 AT GMSPO.
