J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor

Important: Use oversize valve stem seals if you install oversize valves.

  1. Lightly lap the reconditioned valves into the valve seat.
  2. Coat the coolant jacket plugs with sealer. Use GM P/N 1050026 or its equivalent.
  3. Install the coolant jacket plugs.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the plugs to 19 N·m (14 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the valve stem oil seals.
  6. Install the valves.
  7. Use the following procedure to measure the valve seat concentricity:
  8. 6.1. Lift the valve off its seat.
6.2. Apply a dab of Prussian blue to the valve face.
6.3. Seat and rotate the valve.

The Prussian blue traces transferred to the valve seat are an indication of concentricity of the valve seat.

  9. Use the following procedure to measure valve runout:
  10. 7.1. Clean all traces of the Prussian blue from the valve face and the valve seat.
7.2. Apply a dab of Prussian blue to the valve seat.
7.3. Seat and rotate the valve.

The traces of Prussian blue transferred to the valve indicates valve runout.

7.4. Recondition the valve seat or valve face if needed. Replace the valves if necessary.
