Water Pump Replacement 3800

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38185 Hose Clamp Pliers
    • J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

  1. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove accessory electrical junction block and reposition.
  3. Loosen water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  5. Remove water pump pulley.

  7. Remove power steering pump mounting bolts and reposition. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  8. Remove bolts from water pump.
  9. Remove water pump.
  10. Clean the water pump mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure

NOTICE: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.

  1. Install the gasket and water pump.
  2. Install the bolts to the water pump using J 36660-A .
  3. Tighten

        • Tighten the long bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft) plus 40 degrees
        • Tighten the short bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft) plus 80 degrees.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the water pump pulley, do not tighten the bolts.
  5. Install the power steering pump with mounting bolts. Refer to Power Steering Gear Pump Pulley Replacement in Power Steering Gear & Pump.
  6. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  7. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 13 N·m(115 lb in)

  9. Install the accessory electrical junction block in place.
  10. Refill the engine coolant, refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  11. Inspect for leaks.

Water Pump Replacement 3100

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the drive belt guard, bolts and the nuts. Refer to Engine Mechanical.

  4. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  5. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Engine Mechanical.

  6. Object Number: 30996  Size: SH
  7. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  8. Remove the water pump pulley.
  9. Remove the water pump attaching bolts.
  10. Remove the water pump.
  11. Remove the water pump gasket.
  12. Clean the water pump mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the gasket.
  2. Install the water pump.
  3. Install the water pump mounting bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 10N·m (89 lb in).

  5. Install the water pump pulley. Loosely install the mounting bolts.
  6. Install the drive belt. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
  7. Install the water pump pulley bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pully bolts to 25N·m (18 lb in).

  9. Install the drive belt guard, bolts and the nuts. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
  10. Important: Properly filling a system that has been completely drained will require the use the air bleed vents.

  11. Refill the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  12. Inspect for leaks.

Water Pump Replacement 3.4L

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement .
  3. Remove the bolts of the water pump pulley.
  4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  5. Remove the water pump pulley.

  7. Remove the bolts from the water pump.
  8. Remove the water pump and the gasket.
  9. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the gasket and the water pump.
  2. Install the bolts to the water pump.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  4. Install the water pump pulley. Loosely install the pulley mounting bolts.
  5. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  6. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to specifications.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement .
  9. Refill the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  10. Start the engine. After the engine reaches normal operating temperature, check for water leaks.
