Battery Replacement Chevrolet/Oldsmobile

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the air cleaner.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  4. Remove the bolts from the cross brace.
  5. Remove the cross brace.
  6. If equipped with antilock brakes, remove the following parts:
  7. 6.1. The relay center.
    6.2. The bolts from the relay center bracket.
    6.3. The relay center bracket.
  8. Remove the electrical connector from the windshield washer pump. Refer to Section 8E.
  9. Remove the windshield washer line from the pump. Refer to Section 8E.
  10. Remove the windshield washer reservoir. Refer to Section 8E.
  11. Remove the air cleaner bracket upper attachment bolt.

  13. Remove the hold down bolt, the air cleaner bracket, and the air cleaner retainer.
  14. Remove the battery.
  15. Remove the battery heat shield from the battery.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 45664  Size: SH
  1. Install the battery heat shield to the battery.
  2. Install the battery.
  3. Install the retainer, the air cleaner bracket, and the hold down bolt.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the hold down bolt to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. Install the air cleaner bracket upper attachment bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  7. Install the windshield washer reservoir and the retainers. Refer to Section 8E.
  8. Install the windshield washer line to the pump. Refer to Section 8E.
  9. Install the electrical connector to the windshield washer pump. Refer to Section 8E.
  10. If equipped with antilock brakes, install the following parts:
  11. 8.1. The relay center bracket and the bolt.
    8.2. The relay center.
  12. Install the cross brace.
  13. Install the bolts to the cross brace.
  14. Tighten

        • Tighten the cross brace front bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
        • Tighten the cross brace rear bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
  15. Install the positive battery cable.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  17. Install the negative battery cable.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  19. Install the air cleaner.

Battery Replacement Pontiac/Buick

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the diagonal cross brace. Refer to Section 10-5.
  2. Remove the windshield washer reservoir. Refer to Section 8E.
  3. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in General Information.
  4. Disconnect the battery (positive) cable.
  5. Remove the battery hold down retainer.
  6. Remove the underhood electrical.
  7. Important: Do not tip the battery more than 40 degrees during removal.

  8. Remove the battery.

  10. Remove the battery insulator from the battery.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the battery insulator to the battery.
  2. Important: Do not tip the battery more than 40 degrees during installation.

  3. Install the battery.

  4. Object Number: 165350  Size: SH
  5. Install the battery hold down retainer.
  6. Install the underhood electrical center.
  7. Install the battery (positive) cable to the battery.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the battery (positive) cable to 15 N·m (11 lb  ft).

  9. Install the battery ground (negative) cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in General Information.
  10. Install the windshield washer reservoir. Refer to Section 8E.
  11. Install the diagonal cross brace. Refer to Section 10-5.
