DEFINITION:

Starter solenoid clicks, but the engine does not crank.

Important: Battery must be in a charged state to avoid misdiagnosis.

  1. Put the gear selector to P (Park).
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  3. Using a digital multimeter measure the voltage from the battery positive terminal to the starter solenoid terminal B.

Is the voltage less than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 3

Go to Step 2

Replace the battery positive cable. Refer to Battery Cable.

Is the replacement complete?

System OK

  1. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  2. Using a digital multimeter, measure the voltage from the battery negative terminal to G117.

Is the voltage less than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 4

Replace the battery negative cable. Refer to Ground Leads.

Is the replacement complete?

System OK

Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid terminal S and the battery.

Does the starter crank?

--

Go to Step 7

Replace the starter assembly. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.

Is the replacement complete?

Check for a poor connection or high resistance in the starter circuit. Repair as neccessary.

Is the repair complete?

Refer to Theft Deterrent System PASS-Key® II (Cell 133) in SECTION 8A for the following symptoms:

    • Engine does not crank, starter solenoid does not click.
    • Engine cranks slowly but does not start.
