Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
    • J 28467-90 Engine Support Adapter
    • J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg Set
  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the air cleaner duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  3. Install the J 28467-A .
  4. Install the J 28467-90 .
  5. Install the J 36462 .
  6. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
  7. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to

    Caution: To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off the hoist.

  8. Remove the left front wheel. Refer to Tires and Wheels.
  9. Remove the left engine splash shield. Refer to Body Front End.
  10. Remove the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arms. Refer to Front Suspension.
  11. Remove the left tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Refer to Power Steering Gear Unit Repair.
  12. Remove the wheel speed sensor harness connector. Refer to Engine Controls.
  13. Remove the left lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to Front Suspension.
  14. Remove the left drive axle from the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axle.
  15. Secure the drive axle to the steering knuckle/strut.
  16. Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or damage to the intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

  17. Remove the pinch bolt at the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Steering Wheel and Column On-Vehicle Service.
  18. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Wheel and Column On-Vehicle Service.
  19. Remove the three-way catalytic converter pipe to the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust System.
  20. Support the right side of the frame with jackstands.
  21. Support the left side of the frame with jackstands.
  22. Remove the transaxle mount bracket.
  23. Remove the transaxle mount.
  24. Loosen the engine mount nuts at the frame. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
  25. Loosen the right side frame to body bolts. Refer to Body Dimensions, Frame and Underbody.
  26. Remove the left side frame to body bolts. Refer to Body Dimensions, Frame and Underbody.
  27. Adjust the jackstand to the lower left side of the frame.
  28. Position the drain pan under the transaxle.

  30. Remove the case side cover bolts.

  32. Remove the case side cover pan.
  33. Remove the case side cover gasket.
  34. Clean the case.
  35. Clean the side cover gasket surfaces.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 28467-90 Engine Support Adapter
    • J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg Set

  1. Install the case side cover gasket.
  2. Install the case side cover pan.

  3. Object Number: 13013  Size: SH
  4. Install the case side cover bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the case side cover bolts to 24 N·m (17 lb ft). Refer to

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the case side cover nuts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  8. Remove the drain pan from under the transaxle.
  9. Adjust the jackstand to raise the left side of the frame.
  10. Install the left side frame to body bolts. Refer to Body Dimensions, Frame and Underbody.
  11. Install the right side frame to body bolts. Refer to Body Dimensions, Frame and Underbody.
  12. Install the engine mount nuts at the frame. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
  13. Install the transaxle mount.
  14. Install the transaxle mount bracket.
  15. Remove the jackstand support from the right side of the frame.
  16. Remove the jackstand support from the left side of the frame.
  17. Install the three-way catalytic converter pipe to the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust System.
  18. Caution: When installing the intermediate shaft make sure that the shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two mating shafts may disengage. Disengagement of the two mating shafts will cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

  19. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Steering Wheel and Column On-Vehicle Service.
  20. Install the pinch bolt at the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Steering Wheel and Column On-Vehicle Service.
  21. Install the left drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axle.
  22. Install the left lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Front Suspension.
  23. Install the wheel speed sensor harness connector. Refer to Engine Controls.
  24. Install the left tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Refer to Power Steering Gear Unit Repair.
  25. Install the stabilizer shaft links to the lower control arms. Refer to Front Suspension.
  26. Install the left engine splash shield. Refer to Body Front End.
  27. Install the left front wheel. Refer to Tires and Wheels.
  28. Lower the vehicle.
  29. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
  30. Remove the J 36462 .
  31. Remove the J 28467-90 .
  32. Remove the J 28467-A .
  33. Remove the air cleaner duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  34. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery.
  35. Notice: Do NOT overfill the transaxle. The overfilling of the transaxle causes foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints, and possible damage to the transaxle.

  36. Adjust the fluid level.
  37. Inspect for proper completion of the repairs.
  38. Inspect for fluid leaks.
