Subject: | Sun Visors May Not Stay in Intended Position (Replace Sun Visors and Retainers) |
Models: | 1997-2003 Buick Century, Regal |
Built Prior to September, 2002 |
Some customers may comment on insufficient tension of the sun visor rod to hold the visor in the intended position.
The sun visor rod may not make proper contact with the sun visor.
Important: A new design sun visor was installed in production on August 6, 2002. The majority of vehicles built during the month of August 2002 will already be equipped with the new design visor. If you are uncertain as to which design a particular vehicle is equipped with, complete the following inspection.
Try to insert your fingers between the headliner and the top of the visor. The original design visors maintain approximately a 12.7 mm (1/2 in) gap at the headliner when the visor is in its upmost position. The new design will keep upward tension against the head liner when the visor is in its upmost position, preventing you from being able to insert your fingers above it without exerting pressure on the visor.Notice: During the removal procedure of the sun visor from the sun visor bezel, it is possible that the bezel may become damaged. Typically, one of the three retaining fingers of the bezel may shear off. If this happens, remove the bezel by prying from the center of the bezel -- not between the headliner and the bezel. The bezel is easily replaceable, so take great care not to damage the headliner.
Replace the sun visor retainer and sun visor with a newly revised part. On 1997-2003 vehicles built before August 6, 2002, both left and right visors and retainers will have to be replaced as they are physically different in appearance. Follow the sun visor and retainer removal and replacement procedures outlined in the Interior Trim sub-section of Service Information.
Important: The part numbers listed in the chart below indicate the proper replacement visors that match taupe and gray colored headliners. There are NO revised style replacement visors available for red or blue interiored vehicles built from 1997-2000. If this service is requested for a red or blue interiored vehicle, the customer should be informed that they can only be offered a taupe or gray colored visor.
