Parking Brake Cable Replacement Front

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 37043 Park Brake Cable Release Tool


    Object Number: 177148  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the park brake cable at the equalizer.
  3. Lower the vehicle; leave the vehicle on the hoist.
  4. Remove the left side instrument panel insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  5. Remove the left side carpet retainers. Refer to Front Carpet Retainer Replacement in Interior Trim.
  6. Remove the lower center pillar trim panel on the left side. Refer to Center Pillar Lower Trim Panel Replacement in Interior trim.
  7. Fold back the carpeting in order to gain access to the park brake cable.
  8. Remove the park brake cable (1) from the hold down clips (2).

  10. Remove the cable button end from the park brake lever clevis.

  11. Object Number: 177173  Size: SH
  12. Remove the cable from the park brake lever using the J 37043 .
  13. Remove the front cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 177096  Size: SH
  1. Install the front cable into the vehicle.
  2. Connect the cable to the park brake lever.
  3. Install the cable button in the lever clevis.

  4. Object Number: 177148  Size: SH
  5. Install the park brake cable (1) into the hold down clips (2).
  6. Position the carpeting properly.
  7. Install the left side lower center pillar trim panel. Refer to Center Pillar Lower Trim Panel Replacement in Interior trim.
  8. Install the left side carpet retainers. Refer to Front Carpet Retainer Replacement in Interior Trim.
  9. Install the left side instrument panel insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

  10. Object Number: 177170  Size: SH
  11. Raise the vehicle.
  12. Install the cable end to the equalizer (2).
  13. Tighten the nut on the equalizer (2) in order to remove the slack in the cable.
  14. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment .
  15. Lower the vehicle.

Parking Brake Cable Replacement Left/Right Rear

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 177170  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Loosen the brake cable at the equalizer (2).

  3. Object Number: 177172  Size: SH
  4. Remove the cable from the mounting bracket.
  5. Remove the cable from the actuator lever, if equipped with disc brakes.
  6. Remove the cable from the park brake lever, if equipped with drum brakes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.

  7. Object Number: 177173  Size: SH
  8. Remove cable from the support bracket (with disc brakes), or the backing plate (with drum brakes) using J 37043 .
  9. Remove the park brake cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 177172  Size: SH
  1. Place the cable in position.
  2. Install the cable to the support bracket (with disc brakes), or the backing plate (with drum brakes).
  3. Install the cable to the actuator lever, if equipped with disc brakes.
  4. Install the cable to the park brake lever, if equipped with drum brakes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  5. Install the cable on the mounting bracket.

  7. Tighten the nut on the equalizer (2) in order to remove the slack in the cable.
  8. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment .
  9. Lower the vehicle.
