Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  5. Remove the right spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  6. Remove the EVAP purge valve. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  7. Remove the ignition coil bracket with the coils. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  8. Remove the Ignition Coil bracket Studs.
  9. Remove the vacuum hose from the grommet in the right valve rocker arm cover.

  10. Object Number: 61834  Size: SH
  11. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  12. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover.
  13. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  14. Clean the valve rocker arm cover.
  15. Clean the valve rocker arm cover gasket mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 190589  Size: SH

    Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12346286 (Canadian P/N 10953472) or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

  1. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the rear of the lower intake manifold (1).

  2. Object Number: 190588  Size: SH
  3. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the front of the lower intake manifold (1).
  4. Install a new right valve rocker arm cover gasket.

  5. Object Number: 61834  Size: SH
  6. Install the right valve rocker arm cover.
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the right valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  10. Install the vacuum hose to the grommet in the right valve rocker arm cover.
  11. Install the ignition coil bracket studs.
  12. Install the ignition coil bracket with the coils. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  13. Install the EVAP purge valve. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  14. Install the right spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  15. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  16. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  17. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  18. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  19. Inspect for leaks.
