DEFINITION: The courtesy lamps are inoperative from the instrument panel (I/P) dimmer switch or a single courtesy lamp is inoperative from the switch on the courtesy lamp assembly.

Did you perform the Lighting System Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Close all the doors and turn the I/P lamp dimmer switch to the DOME position.
  3. Determine if all the following lamps operate from the I/P dimmer switch:
  4. • Dome lamp
    • I/P courtesy lamps
    • Roof rail courtesy/reading lamp
    • Inside rear view mirror

Are all these courtesy lamps ON?

Go to Step 3

  1. Close all the doors and turn the I/P lamp dimmer switch to the OFF position.
  2. Operate the following lamps from their individual switches:
  3. • Roof rail courtesy/reading lamp
    • Inside rear view mirror

Are the courtesy lamps operational from their individual switches?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 9

Determine which of the following lamps are inoperative from the I/P dimmer switch:

    • Dome lamp
    • I/P courtesy lamps
    • Roof rail courtesy/reading lamp
    • Inside rear view mirror

Are all of these lamps inoperative from the I/P dimmer switch?

Go to Step 5

  1. Turn ignition switch to the RUN position, with the engine OFF.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Courtesy Switch Input data.
  3. Turn the I/P lamp dimmer switch to the DOME position.

Does the scan tool indicate that the courtesy switch input is ON?

Go to Step 12

  1. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the headlamp switch connector.
  3. Turn ignition switch to the RUN position, with the engine OFF.
  4. Probe the ground circuit for the I/P dimmer switch with a test lamp that is connected to battery voltage.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 7

  1. Connect a fused jumper between the ground circuit and the courtesy lamp switch signal circuit of the I/P dimmer switch.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Courtesy Switch Input data.

Does the scan tool indicate that the courtesy switch input is ON?

  1. Determine which courtesy lamp is inoperative.
  2. Remove the inoperative courtesy lamp bulb.
  3. Using a test lamp probe between the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit and the courtesy lamp low control circuit of the inoperative courtesy bulb socket.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test for an open or high resistance in the individual switch ground circuit of the inoperative courtesy lamp. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 24

  1. Disconnect the inoperative courtesy lamp connector.
  2. Using a test lamp connected to ground, probe the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit of the inoperative courtesy lamp connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 11

Using a test lamp, probe between the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit and the courtesy lamp low control circuit of the inoperative courtesy lamp.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the body control module (BCM). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair an open or high resistance in the courtesy lamp low control circuit of the inoperative courtesy lamp. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Important: Perform the set up procedure for the BCM.

Replace the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement in Body Control System.

Replace the inoperative courtesy lamp bulb. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

    • Replace the inoperative dome lamp bulb. Refer to Dome Lamp Bulb Replacement .
    • Replace the I/P courtesy lamp bulb. Refer to Instrument Panel Courtesy Lamp Bulb Replacement .
    • Replace roof rail courtesy/reading lamp bulb. Refer to Roof Side Rail Lamp Replacement .
    • Replace Inside rear view mirror. Refer to Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement in Stationary Glass.

Replace the inoperative courtesy lamp assemble. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

    • Replace roof rail courtesy/reading lamp. Refer to Roof Side Rail Lamp Replacement .
    • Replace Inside rear view mirror. Refer to Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement in Stationary Glass.

Replace the headlamp switch. Refer to Headlamp Switch Replacement .

  2. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
