Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Remove the air cleaner intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.

  2. Object Number: 161181  Size: SH
  3. Remove the A/T range selector cable from the wiring harness clip or strap.

  4. Object Number: 629690  Size: SH
  5. Remove the A/T range selector cable retainer.

  6. Object Number: 629687  Size: SH
  7. Remove the A/T range selector cable from the A/T range selector lever.
  8. Remove the A/T range selector cable from the A/T range selector cable bracket.

  9. Object Number: 161185  Size: SH
  10. Remove the left knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  11. Remove the A/T range selector cable from the shift control lever.

  12. Object Number: 161182  Size: SH
  13. Install a piece of mechanics wire to the end of the A/T range selector cable.
  14. Remove the A/T range selector cable through the hole in the cowl.

Installation Procedure

Caution: Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 161182  Size: SH
  1. Install the A/T range selector cable through the hole in the cowl.
  2. Remove the mechanics wire from the end of the A/T range selector cable.

  3. Object Number: 161185  Size: SH
  4. Install the A/T range selector cable to the shift control lever.
  5. Install the left knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

  6. Object Number: 161152  Size: SH
  7. Properly route and position the A/T range selector cable.

  9. Install the A/T range selector cable to the A/T range selector cable bracket.
  10. Install the A/T range selector cable to the A/T range selector lever.

  12. Install the A/T range selector cable retainer.

  13. Object Number: 161176  Size: SH
  14. Place the transaxle in the NEUTRAL position.
  15. Place the shift control in the NEUTRAL position.
  16. Connect each cable section to the following before connecting the 2 cable sections.
  17. 11.1. Insert the metal end fitting of the shift control cable into the transaxle cable end.
    11.2. Use the molded end fittings to push the metal end fitting of the shift control cable and the transaxle cable end together until the metal post snaps into place.
  18. Depress the adjuster clip once. This mobilizes the adjuster housing toward the transaxle end fitting.
  19. Line up the end fittings so they slide together until you feel the parts cam together and lock.

  21. Depress the adjuster clip completely. This locks the cable into its adjusted service position.
  22. Pull the conduit in the opposite direction to assure full system adjustment of the shift cable.

    Important: The horseshoe clip with the tab is flush when fully engaged.

  24. Ensure the conduit is fully engaged.

  26. The horseshoe clip with the tab is not flush when not fully engaged.

  28. Install the A/T range selector cable to the wiring harness clip or strap.
  29. Adjust the A/T range selector cable. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .
  30. Install the air cleaner intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
