Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Shift the gear selector lever to the REVERSE position and then to the PARK position.

Do the backup lamps turn on in REVERSE and turn off in PARK?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Remove the backup lamp relay.

Do the backup lamps turn off?

Go to Step 4

Connect a test lamp between the control circuit of the backup lamp relay and the coil side supply of the backup lamp relay.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 5

Test for a short to ground in backup lamp relay control circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the conditions?

Go to Step 9

Repair a short to battery positive voltage in the backup lamp supply voltage circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 9

Replace the body control module (BCM). Refer to Control Module References in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup and programming.

Replace the backup lamp relay. Refer to Relay Replacement in Wiring Systems.

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
