Since the problems in steering, suspension, tires and wheels involve several systems, consider all of these factors when diagnosing a complaint. Always road test the vehicle first in order to avoid using the wrong symptom. Proceed with the following preliminary checks. Correct any substandard conditions.

Inspect the suspension subsystem for the following conditions:

    • Inspect the tires for incorrect air pressure. Refer to Tire Inflation Pressure Specifications in General Information.
    • Inspect the tires for uneven wear.
    • Inspect the joints from the steering column to the steering gear for loose connectors or for wear.
    • Inspect the front suspension for loose or for damaged parts.
    • Inspect the rear suspension for loose or for damaged parts.
    • Inspect the steering gear or the linkage for loose or for damaged parts.
    • Inspect for out-of-balance or out-of-round tires.
    • Inspect for bent wheels.
    • Inspect for loose or rough wheel bearings.
    • Inspect for power steering system leaks.
    • Inspect the power steering fluid level.
