Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  4. Object Number: 474468  Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the engine block heater cord from the engine block heater (6).

  6. Object Number: 474460  Size: SH
  7. Loosen the engine block heater screw.
  8. Remove the engine block heater.
  9. Clean the engine block heater hole.

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the following components with the lubricant GM P/N 12345996 or the equivalent:
  2. • The engine block heater seal
    • The cleaned surface of the engine block heater hole

  3. Install the block heater.

  4. Object Number: 474461  Size: SH
  5. Position the block heater at the (3) position (3 O'clock position).
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Tighten the engine block heater screw.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  9. Connect the engine block heater cord (6) onto the engine block heater.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Refill the engine coolant.
  12. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
