SPEEDOMETER EMISSION FLAG MAINTENANCE REMINDER RESET

MODELS AFFECTED: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH SPEEDOMETER EMISSION SERVICE FLAG

Beginning in 1978 Buick began using an emission reminder flag incorporated within the speedometer on certain models, to alert the customer that an emission device on their vehicle was due for service or replacement. Depending on the speedometer design used for different models one of two resetting procedures must be used. The emission flag resetting procedures are detailed in the following illustrations.

To avoid early deployment of the flag (and to avoid causing a "comeback") it is important to feel 3 clicks or detents of the flag wheel and to insure that the alignment mark is in the center of the window after resetting is complete, per #3 in both illustrations.

Procedure for Speedometers With Removable Lens (See Figure 1)

1. Detent on flag outer rim.

2. A. Remve instrument cluster bezel. B. Remve instrument cluster lens. C. Using pointed tool turn flag wheel downward. Insert tool at an angle to engage detents.

3. Alignment mark must be in center of window when reset.

Procedure for 1980 Buick B-C Speedometers (Non Removeable Lens) (See Figure 2)

1. Remove instrument cluster bezel.

2. Pull cable until flag wheel hits a built-in stop. When properly reset, a black location mark on the edge of the flag must be visible thru the odometer window.

3. Aligmnent mark must be in center of window when reset.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
