INADVERTENT CHIME ACTUATION NEW P/N FOR CHIME

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1984 Oldsmobiles With Y67 Reminder Package

Some 1984 models with Y67 reminder option may give a false (random) seat belt warning light and/or chime during vehicle operation. This may be caused by a voltage spike from the HEI ignition system, and may be repaired by replacing the centre contact brush in the distributor cap with a past model part, which has approximately 4.2K ohm resistance. This brush was discontinued as a resistor type brush in February 1983. However, the resistance brush is currently back into 1984 production. Order part no. 1989880. This part can be identified by its black colour (carbon resistor) with copper on each end. The faulty brush is solid copper coloured with very low or no resistance. Random chimes caused-by other than the voltage spike mentioned above may be corrected by installing a new module, part no. 22527058, if there are no other electrical faults in the system.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
