CAMPAIGN: CALIFORNIA DIESEL EMISSIONS- EGR VALVE

CONDITION GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT CERTAIN 1981 "A", "B", "C", "E", "K" MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A 5.7L (LF9) V8 DIESEL ENGINE, AND SOLD FOR USE IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA MAY HAVE A INOPERATIVE EGR VALVE AND THEREFORE, MAY NOT COMPLY WITH EXHAUST EMISSION STANDARDS. VEHICLES INVOLVED 1981 "A", "B", "C", "E", "K" MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A 5.7L (LF9) V8 DIESEL ENGINE AND BUILT FOR USE IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. INSTALL SEAT AND FENDER COVERS AND OPEN THE HOOD. 2. REMOVE THE AIR CLEANER AND RESONATOR ASSEMBLY. 3. REMOVE THE EGR VALVE STUD AND REMOVE THE EGR VALVE FROM THE AIR CROSSOVER. 4. CLEAN OUT THE EGR PIPE PASSAGES ATTACHED TO THE AIR CROSSOVER BY USING A SUITABLE BRUSH. 5. INSTALL A NEW EGR VALVE, PART NUMBER LISTED IN THE PARTS INFORMATION SECTION OF THIS BULLETIN. COVER THE AIR CROSSOVER INLET WITH COVER J-26996-1. 6. DISCONNECT THE TWO WIRE GENERATOR CONNECTOR AND START AND WARMUP THE ENGINE. 7. USING ALUMINOSITY TIMING METER, ADJUST THE INJECTION PUMP TIMING TO 6 DEGREE ATDC (-6 DEGREE) AT 1200 RPM WITH THE EGR VACUUM HOSE DISCONNECTED. 8. TURN ENGINE OFF AND REMOVE THE TIMING METER AND THE AIR CROSSOVER INLET COVER. INSTALL THE AIR CLEANER HOUSING RESONATOR BEING SURE TO CONNECT THE VACUUM HOSE TO THE EGR VALVE AND SOLENOID. 9. RECONNECT THE TWO WIRE GENERATOR CONNECTOR. 10. START ENGINE AND VISUALLY OBSERVE THAT EGR VALVE OPENS. 11. TURN ENGINE OFF AND CONFIRM THAT EGR VALVE CLOSES. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ELEMENT AND COVER. PARTS INFORMATION PARTS ARE TO BE OBTAINED FROM WDDGM USING THE FOLLOWING PART NUMBER: DESCRIPTION PART NUMBER EGR VALVE 17081000 TO ENSURE THIS PART IS OBTAINED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IT SHOULD BE ORDERED FROM GM PARTS (WDDGM) ON A C.I.O. ORDER WITH NO SPECIAL INSTRUCTION CODE, BUT ORDER ON AN ADVISE CODE (2).
