SOME 1981 ELECTRA MODELS MAY HAVE A WHISTLE NOISE BETWEEN 30-55 M.P.H. THIS COULD BE CAUSED BY A GAP BETWEEN THE CENTER FRONT END PANEL MOLDING AND THE HEADER PANEL. THE ORIGIN OF THE WHISTLE CAN BE CONFIRMED BY APPLYING MASKING TAPE OVER THE GAP AND ROADTESTING. THE CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED BY APPLYING A BEAD OF 3M SUPER SILICONE SEALANT (CLEAR) P/N 8661 OR DOW CORNING SILICONE SEALANT (CLEAR) P/N 732-CL11 OR EQUIVALENT BETWEEN THE TOP EDGE OF THE CENTER FRONT END PANEL MOLDING AND HEADER PANEL. (SEE ILLUSTRATION.) FORCE THE SEALANT INTO THE GAP USING THE INDEX FINGER AND CLEAN OFF THE EXCESS SEALANT.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
