MECHANICAL SPEEDOMETER REPAIR INFORMATION

MODELS AFFECTED: ALL 1984 MODELS

BUICK POLICY

New Car Limited Warranty

Speedometers are warranted under the "New Car Limited Warranty" for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Units requiring repair during the warranty period should be sent to an authorized AC-Delco Repair Center.

Extended Warranty Vehicles

Speedometers repaired on vehicles with over 12,000 miles and/or 12 months but covered by the Optional Limited Warranty Extension will require that a copy of the Extended Warranty Validation Form be submitted along the the Warranty Repair Claim (ACD 1078), (Fig. 1). The Extended Warranty Validation Form should be located in the owners warranty folder. This will provide the Warranty Repair Center with evidence that the vehicle is covered for the extended warranty period.

EXCHANGE PROGRAM

Many AC-Delco Centers offer an exchange program for 1984 speedometers in need or repair. However, prior approval of the owner to accept an exchanged unit must be obtained and noted on the repair order. The program is very helpful in reducing customer inconvenience. Participation in the exchange program is voluntary on the part of the AC-Delco center; therefore, all centers do not offer this service. Dealers should check with their AC-Delco center to see if the exchange program is available and if the specific repaired unit required is in stock.

PROCEDURE

Whether repairing or obtaining an exchange unit, dealers should never refer the owner to the AC-Delco center, but should handle the transaction for the owner. Remove the unit to be repaired from the car,)complete all red shaded areas of the Warranty Repair Claim (ACD-1078) (Fig. , and send the unit and all five (5) copies of the completed form to the authorized AC-Delco Repair/Exchange center in their area.

SPEEDOMETERS MUST BE ASSEMBLED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE EXCHANGE PROGRAM WHEN AVAILABLE AND THE DEALER REQUESTING THE EXCHANGE WILL BE CHARGED FOR ANY MISSING OR DAMAGED PARTS.

Notice

For details about the servicing of odometers, refer to Part X, Section C, of the 1984 Buick Service Policies and Procedures Manual.

The repaired or exchange unit will be returned to your dealership for installation in the owners vehicle.

BUICK WARRANTY CLAIM

The returned unit will have with it the dealer's copy of the completed AC-Delco form. A Buick Warranty Claim is to be submitted for the R&R of the unit along with the freight charges. The dealer copy of the Form ACD-1078 and the freight receipt or shipping invoice must be attached to the Warranty copy of the dealer repair order. If the repair is done by the dealer, or sublet to a qualified non AC-Delco repair station, credit will be allowed on a Buick Warranty Claim. Allowances for such repairs are included in the Labor Time Guide. Sublet repair charges should be included on the claim and the sublet bill retained in the usual manner.

An additional 0.2 hour administrative allowance will be paid when units are repaired under warranty by an AC-Delco repair station or other qualified service outlet. This additional time must be listed as "other labor hours" with the labor operation for R&R of the unit.

A completed listing of AC-Delco Service Centers was furnished to Dealers in May, 1983. This listing (SD-2) was published by AC-Delco in April, 1983 and should be referred to when requesting service on 1984 components. The NEW 1984 cruise control system is to be serviced using 1984 Buick Service Manual Procedures and is not to be sent to AC-Delco Service Centers.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
