POWER STEERING PUMP NOISE SYSTEM PROCEDURE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1986 AND 1987 FRONT WHEEL DRIVE ELECTRAS AND LESABRES

When servicing the power steering system, pump noise can occur if the system is not properly bled. This is due to air becoming trapped in the system causing pump cavitation. To properly bleed the power steering system, it is important that prior to starting engine, the steering wheel be rotated from stop to stop until na air bubbles appear in the reservoir fluid. In some cases, it may take up to 20 cycles to completely remove the air; therefore, it is recommended that the front wheels be raised off the floor when turning steering wheel.

Power steering fluid should be checked "hot" and filled to the hot mark to obtain proper fill.
