Attention: Proceed with this bulletin ONLY if the customer has commented about this concern AND the EI number is listed in GMVIS. If the customer has not commented about this condition or the EI does not show in GMVIS, disregard the bulletin and proceed with diagnostics found in published Service Information. THIS IS NOT A RECALL - refer to Service Bulletin 04-00-89-053A for more detail on the use of Engineering Information bulletins.

Condition

Important:  If the customer did not bring their vehicle in for this issue, DO NOT proceed with this bulletin.

Some customers may comment on the rear seat entertainment video screen module (overhead unit) not working properly or the screen is blank. Also, the customer may comment that the DVD audio is playing, but there is no DVD video playing on the rear screen(s).

Cause

DO NOT REPLACE THE DVD VIDEO SCREEN MODULE(s).

Important:  The DVD player (integrated in the radio) is separate from the DVD screen and should be diagnosed separately.

Use the following information to diagnose the customer's concern. Note as much information as possible on the repair order.

  1. Specifically describe the customer's concern. Can the concern be duplicated?
  2. Refer to the appropriate service bulletin based on the customer's concern:
  3. • 06-08-44-026 -- Blank/Black Screen with DVD Audio Present
    • 06-08-44-032 -- Blank/Inoperative Screen, No Audio Present
    • 06-08-44-035 -- Blank/Black Screen After Ignition Key is Cycled, DVD audio is present
  4. Was the customer's concern corrected by following one of the bulletins listed in step 2?
  5. • Yes -- No further repairs are required.
    • No -- proceed with step 4.
  6. Ensure that the DVD connector is fully seated in the body harness connector, located above the DVD screen(s).
  7. Verify that the system is not operating in "half play" mode:
  8. Tip
"half play" mode is experienced when:

       •

the DVD is playing, the driver turns off the vehicle and then completes a full ignition cycle. When the rear entertainment system comes back on, the DVD audio will be playing, however the video screen does not come on unless you press the power button on the remote control.

       •

if the DVD is in the player, nothing might not come on until the rear seat entertainment system is activated by pressing the remote control power button while pointing the remote at the DVD screen.

Understanding "half play" mode, follow steps 5.1 and 5.2 - is the system operating as designed?

5.1. Insert a DVD in the DVD player (integrated in the radio).
5.2. Press the power button on the remote while pointing at the DVD screen, or press the "play" button on the NAV screen (if applicable).
  9. For all vehicles equipped with a 3rd row screen (RPO DNU), and the concern is for one screen being blank while the other is functioning or both screens being blank -- inspect the wiring harness near the inoperative screen first or inspect both screens wiring if both screens are blank. Make any necessary wiring repairs.
  10. Document the cause for and location of any necessary wiring repairs.

  11. Is the customer's concern corrected?
  12. If the customer's concern has not been corrected, contact one of the following engineers to provide findings. The engineer will provide additional diagnosis and repair information.

Important:  For vehicles located within a 2 hour commute from Detroit, MI or Dayton, OH, engineering may request to visit the dealership and inspect the vehicle.
