GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

When the Driver Information Display (DID) powers up it will display all segments on for 2 seconds. Then the DID will return to display status it had before no power condition. In the absence of vehicle communications, a double dash (--) displays in the digits section.

There are 2 buttons on the DID.

  1. E/M (English/Metric) button
  2. MODE button

English/Metric Button

Pressing the E/M button changes the display units. For example on the Instrument Cluster when the E/M button is pressed the speed will change between miles and kilometers.

Pressing the MODE button changes the modes of operation for the driver information display. There are seven display modes available.

    • Off -- No driver information is displayed in this mode of operation.
    • Compass/Temperature
    • Average Fuel Economy (AFE)
    • Instantaneous Fuel Economy (IFE)
    • Trip Range
    • Fuel Used
    • Average Speed

Compass/Temperature Mode

This mode displays an 8 point compass heading on the left hand side of the DID. The compass will display the current vehicle direction relative to one of 8 compass headings using N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW for the readout. The ambient temperature displays on the right hand side of the DID. If the ambient temperature is below 3°C (37°F), the temperature reading will toggle between displaying the outside temperature and the word ICE for two minutes. If the temperature is less than minus 40°F for more than 2 seconds, OC will display. If the temperature is above 140°F for more than 2 seconds, SC will be displayed. If OC or SC is diplayed DTC's will be set.

Compass Calibration

Depress and hold down both the MODE and E/M buttons while the DID is in the Compass/Temperature mode. Ignore the variation zone which shows up after 5 seconds and continue holding the buttons. After ten seconds the DID will acknowledge that calibration is requested by illuminating the C indicator on the compass display if it's not already lit. To calibrate the compass, drive the vehicle through two circles less than 5mph in a magnetically clean area. The C indicator will disappear and the DID will display the proper vehicle display.

Compass Magnetic Variation Adjustment

Object Number: 300398 Size: SH

Compass variation is the difference between magnetic north and geographic north. In some areas of the country the difference is great enough to cause the compass to give a false reading. If this occurs, the compass variance must be set. View the Variance Zone Display to determine the correct zone. The zones are numbered 1 through 15. Depress and hold both the MODE and the E/M buttons simultaneously while the DID is in the Compass/Temperature mode. After 5 seconds, the DID will display the current variation setting. Release the buttons and adjust to the correct variation number using the E/M button. Consult the map for variation zone numbers. When the desired variation is reached press the MODE button to accept.

You cannot reset the Compass/Temperature mode. This mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Average Fuel Economy (AFE)

AFE is calculated as the ratio between the following values:

    • AFE=Distance/Fuel
    • Distance=The accumulated distance since the last AFE reset
    • Fuel=The accumulated fuel consumption since the last AFE reset

You can reset the AFE mode by depressing and holding down both the MODE and E/M buttons for more than 3 seconds. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Instantaneous Fuel Economy (IFE)

Instantaneous fuel economy is calculated as the ratio between the following values:

    • IFE=Distance/Fuel
    • Distance=The accumulated distance since last update
    • Fuel=The accumulated fuel delivered since last update

You cannot reset the IFE mode. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Trip Range

Trip Range is calculated between the following values:

    • Trip Range=AFE x Fuel Remaining
    • Fuel Remaining=Fuel sender value of available fuel

You cannot reset the Trip Range mode. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Fuel Used

The DID calculates and displays the total amount of fuel used since the last reset operation.

You can reset the Fuel Used mode by depressing and holding down both the MODE and E/M buttons for more than 3 seconds. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Average Speed

Average speed is calculated as the ratio between the following values:

    • Average Speed=Distance/Ignition On
    • Distance=Accumulated distance since last reset
    • Ignition On=Accumulated ignition on time since last reset

Ignition on time is measured from the time that the ignition is turned ON, to the time when the ignition is turned OFF.

You can reset the Average Speed mode by depressing and holding down both the MODE and E/M buttons for more than 3 seconds. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Dimming Control

Display dimming for the DID follows the radio dimming characteristics. Upon activation of the parklamps, the display steps from maximum brightness to dim. While in the dim mode, further dimming is controlled by the PWM Dimming Signal of the IP dimming control. The display goes blank upon lowest dimming request of the dimming control.
