Diagnostic Instructions
Circuit/System Description
The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) sends a serial data communication message to the instrument panel module (IPC), the IPC then controls the status of the Passenger Air Bag ON/OFF indicator with this message from the SDM. If the
seat belt is unfastened, only if an occupant is seated in the front passenger seat, the SDM will send a message to the IPC to illuminate the fasten safety belt indicator for 72 seconds or until the seat belt is fastened.

Circuit/System Testing
Important: When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector.
• | The Passenger Air Bag ON/OFF indicator |
• | The IPC wiring harness connector |
• | The Passenger Air Bag ON/OFF indicator wiring harness connector |
• | The SDM wiring harness connector |
- Observe the Passenger Air Bag ON/OFF status indicator. Turn ON the ignition, both ON and OFF indicators will turn ON for 5 seconds. Verify that the Passenger Air Bag ON/OFF status indicator illuminate.
- Using the scan tool go to Body and Accessories, then go onward to Instrument Panel, to Special Functions, to Instrument Panel Cluster, and then go to Display Test. In the Display Test mode you can turn ON or OFF all the instrument panel indicators
when commanded ON. Commanded the IPC indicators ON, the Passenger Seat Belt indicator should turn ON. Verify the passenger seat belt indicator turns ON.
⇒ | If the passenger seat belt indicator does perform as described turn OFF the ignition, remove the I/P indicator module connector. Refer to I/P indicator module replacement in Repair Instructions for connector location. |
• | Use a test lamp and connect passenger seat belt indicator control circuit and ignition 1 voltage circuit then command the IPC ON again. The test lamp should turn ON when the IPC is commanded ON. If the test lamp turns ON then replace the I/P
module indicator. |
• | If test lamp does not turn ON then test and repair the passenger seat belt indicator control circuit for a short to voltage, an open, or high resistance. |
• | If circuit test normal then replace the IPC. |
- Remove the SDM connector, refer to SDM replacement in Repair Instructions for connector location.
- Test the both seat belt switch - right signal and ground circuit for an open or high resistance. Verify that an open or high resistance does not exist.
⇒ | If any of the above conditions are found make the appropriate repair. |
- If all circuits test normal then replace the seat belt switch - right which is part of the right seat belt pretensioner.
