SINCE THE PUBLICATION OF THIS BULLETIN, A NEW HIGHER QUALITY CATEGORY OF OIL WAS INTRODUCED AND IDENTIFIED AS SF. SF IS USED TO IDENTIFY OIL QUALITY EITHER BY ITSELF OR IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER CATEGORIES (SF/CC OR SF/CD). THE NEW CATEGORY SF OILS PROVIDE IMPROVED OIL THICKENING AND WEAR PROTECTION IN COMPARISON TO THE MINIMUM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS OF THE SE QUALITY ENGINE OILS. LISTED BELOW ARE UPDATED OIL USAGE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR 1978 THROUGH 1981 MODELS WITH EXCEPTIONS AS NOTED. THE RECOMMENDATIONS APPLY TO ALL GM 4-CYCLE GASOLINE AND DIESEL ENGINES, BUT NOT TO DETROIT DIESEL ALLISON DIVISION 2-CYCLE DIESEL ENGINE. General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
