POWER STEERING PUMP REVISION: BEGINNING APPROXIMATELY MARCH 15, 1981 , THE METHOD OF RETAINING THE DRIVE SHAFT TO ROTOR ON POWER STEERING PUMPS WAS CHANGED. THE NEW METHOD INVOLVES THE USE OF A ROUND WIRE RETAINING RING IN PLACE OF THE PREVIOUSLY USED SQUARE WIRE RING. SEE FIG. 6. DUE TO CHANGES REQUIRED IN THE CONFIGURATION OF THE RETAINING RING GROOVE IN THE SHAFT AND THE MATING FACE OF THE ROTOR, THE PREVIOUS COMPONENTS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE WITH THE NEW COMPONENTS. HOWEVER, THE COMPLETE PUMP ASSEMBLIES ARE INTERCHANGEABLE. THEREFORE, ALL PREVIOUSLY USED PUMP ASSEMBLIES WILL BE PHASED OUT AND REPLACED WITH NEW PUMPS FOR SERVICE. SAGINAW STEERING GEAR WILL CONTINUE TO MANUFACTURE REPLACEMENT SERVICE PARTS FOR EARLY PUMPS. A REVISED MANUFACTURING DATE STAMP ON THE NEW DESIGN ASSEMBLIES HAS BEEN PROVIDED SO THAT A TECHNICIAN CAN DETERMINE, BEFORE DISASSEMBLY, WHICH DESIGN HE IS WORKING ON. FIG. 7 SHOWS THE OLD AND NEW DATE STAMPS. THE RETAINING RINGS ARE EASILY IDENTIFIABLE DUE TO THEIR SHAPE, AND IDENTIFICATION GROOVES HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE ROTOR AND SHAFT. REFER TO FIG. 6. ALL FUTURE "RING, ROTOR, VANE" KITS AND "DRIVE SHAFT AND RETAINING RING" KITS FOR BOTH PAST MODEL (A REVISION TO THE EXISTING KITS, NO PART NUMBER CHANGE), AND FUTURE MODEL (NEW KIT PART NUMBERS 7837322 RING ROTOR VANE KIT, 7837321 DRIVE SHAFT KIT AND 7837284 RETAINING RING KIT) WILL CONTAIN AN INSTRUCTION SHEET WHICH DETAILS THE INDIVIDUAL IDENTIFICATION MEANS. THE RETAINING RING WILL NO LONGER BE A SEPARATE SERVICE ITEM, BUT WILL BE A KIT (NEW PART NUMBER 7837284) INCLUDING BOTH RETAINING RING DESIGNS AND AN INSTRUCTION SHEET DETAILING WHICH RETAINING RING IS TO BE USED. THE ASSEMBLY AND DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURES WILL REMAIN THE SAME AS PUBLISHED IN THE SERVICE MANUAL. POWER STEERING PUMP REVISION: THE "X" DESIGNATION FOR ROUND WIRE RETAINING RING IS INCORRECT AS IN THE APRIL SERVICE GUILD, PAGE 67, FIG. 7. THE "R" DESIGNATION FOR ROUND WIRE RETAINING RING IS CORRECT (REFER TO FIG. 12) AND SHOULD BE NOTED IN YOUR APRIL SERVICE GUILD.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
