REAR COMPARTMENT WATER LEAKS-2 DOOR LANDAU TOP

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1983-1984 Buick Oldsmobile 'B-37' Styles With Rear Landau Top

Rear compartment water leaks may be experienced on some Buick or Oldsmobile 'B-37' styles equipped with rear 'landau type' vinyl roof covers. This leak may be from an open roof rail seam area.

The open seam location may be underneath the front roof cover moulding where the roof rail has been cut away to provide for installation of the moulding (see Figure 1).

The repair to this condition is as follows:

1. Remove roof drip scalp moulding over door opening.

2. Remove drip scalp moulding above quarter window.

3. Remove upper interior quarter trim as described in the Fisher Body Service Manual.

4. From the inside of the vehicle, remove the two (2) fasteners holding the lock pillar applique.

5a. On Buick styles, remove the lock pillar applique to gain access to the roof rail.

5b. On Oldsmobile styles, rotate the applique out and up (roof cover remains attached) to gain access to the roof rail.

6. Drill three (3) 1/8 inch diameter holes through the remaining roof and side rail panels (Figure 1, View A, Section A).

7. Spread metal panels apart slightly and apply 3M No. 08531 drip check sealer (or equivalent)into the joint area after removing any corrosion.

8. Squeeze joint together and install three (3) rivets, 1/8 inch diameter X 1/4 Lnch long in the holes previously drilled in step 6.

9. Apply a coat of 3M No. 08531 drip check sealer (or equivalent) to the repaired joint area to insure a good seal. Inspect remaining areas of drip rail for open seams and reseal as necessary.

10. Reinstall previously removed mouldings and trim.

11. Water test unit to insure a good repair.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
