1. 1984 NEW BULLETIN FORMAT

A new bulletin numbering system is being introduced for 1984. The new system should make filing and locating of specific bulletins easier. For example, beginning in 1984, the bulletin number will indicate model year, subject (file) group and numerical sequence within that group. See illustration below:

Bulletin No. 84-5-2

84 = Denotes Model Year of Vehicle 5 = Denotes File Group - Brakes 2 = Denotes 2nd Bulletin issued in Brake Group.

Date Sept. '83

Ref. No. 84-001 = For Internal Office Use Only

The most significant change in filing groups will be in the engine and transmission groups. The breakdown for these two groups is as follows:

Engine

Group 6 6A 6B * Engine 6F 6H

6C 6E * Fuel Systems, Driveability & Emission and Turbo 6J 6D Engine Electrical

Transmission

Group 7 Transmissions (Manual & Clutch) 7-125 125C 7-200 200C & 200-4R 7-250 250C 7-325 325-4L 7-440 440-T4

* Bulletins in these groups are considered a single group for sequential numbering purposes. The entire group format now closely parallels the chassis service manual format.

2. WARRANTY AND OWNER ASSISTANCE ON 1984 BUICK NEW CARS (3)

There are three booklets (all cars except California - Part #2551581, California Only Gasoline Engines - Part #2551482 and California Diesel Fueled Engines - Part #25514863 which contain warranty information relative to the new car emission systems, tires, and corrosion.

These publications have been dramatically changed for 1984. They are booklets instead of folders. Owner assistance satisfaction procedures, the GM mediation/arbitration program, special policy adjustment programs, and the GM Continuous Protection Plan are all outlined in this booklet. A separate tire warranty folder is included to outline warranty as provided by individual tire manufacturers.

The owner's name, address, Vehicle Identification Number, date of delivery and mileage at the time of delivery, are all to be typed on the front of the Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet in the space provided. There is a space provided on the back of the folder for the dealer name, address and dealer code.

It is very important that the Owner and Vehicle Information on the 1984 booklet be correct. This information will be the only means of owner identification for repairs covered under warranty. In order for dealer warranty claims to be properly processed at Flint, the Vehicle Identification Number must be correct. Owners should be instructed to carry their Warranty and Owner Assistance Information Booklets in their vehicles at all times.

3. 1984 SERVICE MANUALS

The 1984 Chassis Service Manual was shipped to all Buick dealers prior to September 1, 1983. Again for 1984 it is loose leaf publication in two volumes, covering all model. Two post type binders were also shipped at the same time. These binders should greatly improve page retention over the ring type binder used in 1983.

The 1983 Fisher Body Service Manual will be shipped to all Buick Management Contact Dealers in October, 1983.

4. 1984 BUICK OWNER'S MANUALS

For 1984, there will be a total of seven (7) owner's manuals. Wagon information is included within its car line's owner's manual.

25515765 - Skylark Series 25518860 - Electra Series 25515767 - Century Series 25515766 - Regal Series 25515816 - LeSabre Series 25515768 - Skyhawk Series 25515815 - Riveria Series

5. 1984 VEHICLE CERTIFICATION AND TIRE PRESSURE LABEL

In accordance with Federal Motor Vehicle Regulations, A Vehicle Certification and Tire Pressure Label is being affixed to all 1983 model Buicks.

The label will have a certification statement, Vehicle Identification Number, month and year that the vehicle was built. The label will be attached horizontally to the left front door inner panel lock facing on all models.

The lower portion of the label will have the tire size and tire pressure information.

Due to the certification label's location, it may be subject to damage during car shipment, new vehicle pre-delivery service, through door repair or replacement.

To acquire a replacement certification label, proceed as follows:

a. Obtain an impression of the Vehicle Identification Number on the engine block by rubbing a pencil lightly over a piece of paper held in place against the block.

b. Obtain build date, if at all possible, from damaged certification label.

c. Check Vehicle Identification Nunber on engine block and identification number on instrument panel to see that they match.

d. Obtain the vehicle order number from invoice.

e. Send the readable impression and build date from Steps 1 and 2 above and the vehicle order number taken from the invoice, along with a letter of explanation to:

Buick Motor Division ATTN: J.D. Mack Manager, Technical Service Flint, MI 48550

6. 1984 NEW VEHICLE INSPECTION PRDCEDURE FORM

The New Vehicle Inspection and Delivery Procedure which was introduced in 1983, includes a new NVI for 1984. The new process is now fully implemnted. Therefore, use New Vehicle Inspection Procedure Sheet 101072 This form is shipped with each Buick delivered to you. Additional forms may be obtained through your Zone Office.

7. 1984 GENERAL MOTORS MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE FOLDERS

Two (2) maintenance schedule folders are being used for 1984. They are as follows:

Folder Number Model Usage ------------- ----------- 14065969 CM Maintenance Schedule - Gasoline Only All 50 states

14065971 GM Maintenance Schedule - Diesel Only All 50 states

A newly expanded feature is a more elaborate breakdown between schedules for those owners who subject their cars to either moderate or heavy usage and those who operate their cars under very light and/or ideal conditions. Each item is keyed to Scheduled Maintenance Services and is marked at the proper intervals to either have the item check or serviced. Individual items are numbered and have a corresponding numbered paragraph explaining the maintenance recommendations. There is also a chart on Recommended Fluids and Lubricants (and their usage) in the Maintenance Schedule Folder, and an Owner Inspections and Service Checklist. The checklist describes those items which should be inspected at appropriate intervals by the owner or a qualified technician. Owners should be made aware of this folder, and be encouraged to record servicing dates and mileages for their records.

8. 1984 PAINT CODES

Color chip sheets for the 1984 Buick paints will again be available from Dupont, Ditzler, Inmont (Rinshed-Mason), Sherwin-Williams, Acme/Rogers and Martin-Senour. Each Buick dealer will be sent two (2) copies of each as they become available to us. Those not included with this bulletin will be sent out as they become available.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
